Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was told that it is not a good idea to switch from regular oil to synthetic, was told it might create leaks and damage the engine.

synthetic is always good for an engine. HOWEVER, a high mileage engine that is used to regular oil will likely have high oil consumption if you switch to Full Synthetic. Try a synthetic blend first. It will still benefit the engine, but not cost as much. A common type is 5w-30w.
