2012 Impreza Limited CVT makes a grinding noise (transmission?)

Asked by David Nov 13, 2018 at 12:45 AM about the 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Limited Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2012 Impreza Limited CVT makes a grinding noise (transmission?) 1.
sometimes when starting up in Park, 2. When downshifting heavily on the
tiptronic, 3. When braking hard at < 25mph. 4. Slight grinding from passenger wheel area, when turning right at slower speeds. 5. Sometimes grinds in reverse, especially when I stomp on it. Seems to be coming mostly from passenger side. When I start it up and it's making the grinding noise, I can rock the car back and forth with my body weight and make the grinding more pronounced, like it's riding on the tranny in park. I am going to swap brake pads to try to help troubleshooting. I just want to see if anyone can help before I take it to a mechanic to do the CVT pan drop and fluid change. Sigh. 38k miles, SALVAGE for rear collision, which makes me wonder if the driveshaft was smashed up into the CVT or something. Needless to say, it's not under warranty. I bought this car 1k miles ago. Never any problems shifting gears or driving. Never any check engine lights.

Subaru may cover the CVT anyway as they extended the warranty out to 100,000 miles.

I doubt it; I called in a few weeks back and the sales guy definitely didn't give me any hope. Doesn't salvage pretty much void any warranties except for recalls?

Possibly. I would make them prove the salvage title has anything to do with the transmission failure. Sales is the wrong place to ask. Contact the service manager or SOA directly.
