Overheating problem

Asked by Frank Jul 09, 2018 at 08:10 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my car has overheating problems in
both idling and while driving. I have
changed the thermostat, thermometer
gauge sensor , flushed the radiator with
cleaners and put new fluids in it. I also
directed wired FAN 1 to the ignition switch
so when the car comes on, so does the
fan. When I bought the car the fans won’t
turn on until 3/4 on the gauge and I believe
that it’s still bad for the car. There is no
leaks in anything, fluids are clean. Only
problem I think is that the water pump isn’t
working, or maybe some electrical issue?
Or maybe I should try thicker engine oil. I
live in Arizona so the heats are 110 here.
So even when driving at a calm slow pace,
the gauge are between the halfway mark
and 3/4. So Any answers are welcome.
Thank you

Water pump would be a good suspect. With the car cold, open the radiator cap. Start the car and let it run until it is hot enough to open the thermostat. When it opens, the water pump should be sending a good flow through the radiator that you can see through the open radiator cap. If you see no flow, your pump is probably shot and in need of replacement.
