2000 mercury cougar problems

I just purchased a 2000 mercury cougar with a 2.5 v6 auto transmission. It goes in reverse but does nothing in any forward gear. Is there some modulator or sensor I should look at before replacing the transmission/

I just bought a 2000 mercury cougar in october and i just replaced the alternator and now ill be driving about 100feet and it will go into another gear like neutral and not go anywhere,if i shut my car off for 5mins it will be fine but then about 100more feet do the same thing. i just replaced the transmission sensor and that wasnt it. im hopeing its not the tranny.help!

sounds like the transmission. mine did the same on on transmission number 3!!
