Car Smokes in Idle, Stutters when Accelerating from Idle

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, I have a 2001 Mercury Cougar. The car stutters when accelerating from 0
to 2050 RPM. It also starts to spew large clouds of smoke from under the
engine when in idle, after being ran for a couple minutes. Question is: What
other sorts of things should I test to help diagnose where the problem is?

A simple tune up on these cars will solve alot of problems that may seem like its headed to the junk yard. Change filters and plugs, oil, check for vacuum leaks(they can be difficult to find but are very problematic) this is absolutely what where I would start. Good luck
