2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the soon-to-arrive next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in four trim levels. FWD prices start at $26,700 and go up to $36,480 (plus options), equating to a $650 increase for FWD models and $750 increase for AWD models compared to the 2021 model year. Adding all-wheel drive costs $1,500 on any trim level. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At 33 mpg combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

2023 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

A redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V is on sale, improving on the successful formula the automaker has used for more than 25 years. The 2023 CR-V remains one of the roomiest compact crossover SUVs in its class, and it get an overdue infusion of new infotainment systems and safety features that bring it up to par with its many rivals. In addition, with the 2023 CR-V, Honda places greater emphasis on electrification with a next-generation hybrid powertrain that comes standard in half the lineup. However, in this review, we’ll focus on the 2023 Honda CR-V EX and EX-L trims with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the Honda CR-V Hybrid models.

Look and feel
2022 Nissan Rogue
7/10
2023 Honda CR-V
7/10

The 2022 model of the Nissan Rogue held close to the aesthetic improvements made during its 2021 redesign, carrying forward a mature and sleek design. The new styling traded in some of its previous cuteness for a more sophisticated appearance, aligning it with other modern Nissan lineups like the Pathfinder. The V-motion grille, multi-level LED headlights, and floating roof design collectively provided a distinct visual appeal. Inside, the Rogue aimed for luxury within its segment with Zero Gravity bucket seats and a detailed, layered dash. The incorporation of contrasting color schemes, an electronic gear selector, and large infotainment displays created a modern, well-thought-out cabin environment.

Conversely, the 2023 Honda CR-V signaled a shift toward a conservative yet refined façade with a blunt nose, elongated hood, and stretched wheelbase. While it might not have the same personality as its predecessor, the latest CR-V design was expected to age gracefully. The EX and EX-L trims shared external features like 18-inch alloy wheels and dark-tinted privacy glass. However, inside, the EX-L offered a premium feel with leather-wrapped seats, steering wheel, and shift knob. The dashboard, designed akin to the latest Civic, featured metal mesh trim integrating the air vents, emphasizing a clear division in the dash’s structure.

Performance

Nissan's 2022 Rogue made a significant leap in performance with the introduction of its 1.5-liter VC-Turbo engine, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This advanced engine achieved a balance between power and efficiency, with an EPA rating of 30 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 33 mpg combined. The Variable Compression (VC) technology allowed the engine to adjust compression ratios dynamically, delivering power or efficiency as required. This new setup, combined with the improved CVT, resulted in enhanced acceleration and driving responsiveness. The Rogue's chassis and suspension were designed to offer a smooth yet controlled ride, complemented by precise power-assisted steering.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Honda CR-V retained its 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine familiar from its predecessor, generating 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a CVT, the engine delivered sufficient power for various driving conditions, although the CVT’s droning noise under hard acceleration detracted from the overall driving experience. Despite this, the CR-V excelled in ride quality, handling, and overall driving dynamics due to its refined suspension, steering, and braking systems. With a fuel economy rating of 29 mpg combined, the CR-V remained competitive in its segment.

The Nissan Rogue excelled in offering versatile and spacious interior accommodations. Drivers and passengers found abundant storage solutions throughout the cabin, including bottle holders, storage bins, and various charging ports (USB-A, USB-C, and 12-volt). The Rogue's rear seat featured a 60/40 split reclining bench, providing flexibility for passengers and cargo. Cargo space was impressive as well, offering between 31.6 and 36.5 cubic feet with the seats up, expanding to 74.1 cubic feet with the second row folded flat.

Honda’s new CR-V aimed to be the most spacious in its lineage, though it felt more compact from the driver’s seat. The low seating position contributed to car-like driving comfort, while excellent visibility and comfortable, redesigned seats were significant highlights. The CR-V excelled in rear-seat comfort, feeling almost like a midsize SUV in terms of legroom and thigh support, although headroom might be tight for taller passengers. Storage space in the CR-V's cabin was plentiful, with a notable center bin, door trays, and a forward tray with available wireless charging. The EX-L trim's power liftgate provided easy access to 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Technology

The 2022 Nissan Rogue continued the technological advancements introduced in 2021. Upper trims boasted a trio of advanced screens: a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 10.8-inch head-up display. The infotainment system integrated seamlessly with navigation options, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, with wireless CarPlay available on higher trims. Nissan's ProPilot Assist offered advanced driving assistance, incorporating navigation-linked speed adjustments and nearly autonomous capabilities in certain driving conditions.

The 2023 Honda CR-V presented a user-friendly technology suite. The EX trim featured a 7-inch digital instrument panel paired with a similar-sized infotainment display, while the EX-L upgraded to a 9-inch touchscreen with additional functionalities including wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an upgraded sound system. Despite the upgrades, a Bose premium sound system and some other advanced features remained exclusive to the top-tier Sport Touring Hybrid model. Though lacking some innovations seen in competitors, Honda ensured its tech offerings kept the CR-V competitive within its segment.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue's commitment to safety was evident in its standard Safety Shield 360 suite across all trims, which included features like automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. ProPilot Assist enhanced these capabilities with adaptive cruise control and steering assist for nearly autonomous driving in specific scenarios. Receiving a four-star overall rating from NHTSA and aiming for a high safety mark, the Rogue prioritized occupant protection with extensive airbags and crumple zones.

The 2023 Honda CR-V also stepped up its safety offerings under the Honda Sensing suite, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. New radar and camera units improved the accuracy and smoothness of these systems, along with new features like Traffic Jam Assist. The CR-V incorporated Honda’s ACE body structure and new airbag designs to enhance crash protection. While yet to be crash-tested by NHTSA and IIHS, the CR-V was anticipated to perform well given Honda's safety track record.
