2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Reviews Summary

Following a substantial refresh for the 2021 model year, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup sees few changes. The most significant of them is the cancelation of AMG E63 and E63 S variants. Reportedly due to supply chain problems, V8 engines are being dropped from much of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz lineup. That leaves the E-Class with turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder power plants.

Additionally, automatic high-beam headlights are standard on all 2022 E-Class models, and a couple of paint colors are new. With the coupe and convertible body styles, rear USB charging ports are now standard equipment.

2022 Acura TLX Reviews Summary

Acura is a luxury brand with a lineup that hasn't felt unique or luxurious for many years. However, the design renaissance within Acura, starting with the 2021 TLX sedan and 2022 MDX SUV, is quickly changing that impression. Unchanged for 2022, the TLX has road presence, intense attention to detail, and genuine performance capability that lifts it significantly above Honda models at a reasonable premium. We tested an Acura TLX Type S—an impressionable name last seen in 2008—on the road and the race track.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was a versatile offering, available in coupe, convertible, sedan, and station wagon body styles, a variety unmatched by most competitors. The E-Class sedans, designated as E350, featured a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the E450 variants boasted a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with 4Matic all-wheel drive as an option. For those seeking performance, the AMG-tuned E-Class models, like the AMG E53, offered a more powerful engine. Despite its high ranking in previous reviews, the E-Class struggled with cost-effectiveness, especially in the AMG E53 Cabriolet variant, which, with options, could reach an MSRP of nearly $110,000. However, the luxurious design, both inside and out, was undeniable, with high-end materials and a modern aesthetic that exuded luxury.

The 2022 Acura TLX, with its wide and long stance, presented itself as a substantial luxury sedan. It was notably wider than the BMW 3 Series, with a design that emphasized its size through features like thin headlights and large tailpipes. The Type S variant added unique elements like the Tiger Eye Pearl paint and 20-inch Y-spoke wheels inspired by the Acura NSX. Inside, the TLX was snug, with impressive detailing and a Scandinavian-inspired interior in upper trims. The Type S offered sporty touches like faux-suede inserts and red stitching, with daring color options not found in competitors. Despite its compact interior, the TLX's design and features made it a compelling choice for those seeking a bold and stylish sedan.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 featured a 3.0-liter turbo-six engine with EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology, producing 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. This setup ensured robust throttle response across a wide rev range, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The AMG Speedshift nine-speed automatic transmission and AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system provided excellent power delivery, with multiple driving modes available. The E53 Cabriolet's AMG-tuned air suspension and performance exhaust system enhanced its dual personality, offering both a quiet cruiser and a dynamic performer. Despite some cowl shake, the E53 Cabriolet felt solid and sure-footed, with its AWD system and heated features making it suitable for various weather conditions.

The 2022 Acura TLX offered a smooth and powerful driving experience, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the TLX delivered quick shifts and responsive performance. The optional Super Handling-All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system enhanced stability and handling precision, especially in the Type S variant with its 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine producing 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The TLX's double-wishbone front suspension and adaptive dampers provided consistent grip and balance, while the Brembo brakes offered strong stopping power. The Type S's active exhaust, though subdued, added a sporty touch, and the TLX maintained comfort without sacrificing performance.

Form and function

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG E53 Cabriolet was a true four-passenger convertible, with comfortable seating and an Aircap system to reduce cabin turbulence. The focus was on front passenger comfort, with heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a neck-warming Airscarf system. Sun-reflective leather and ventilated seats were available for hot weather, while the triple-layer acoustic soft top kept the cabin cool and quiet. The multi-contour front seats with massage and Air Balance fragrance system added to the luxury experience. However, trunk space was limited, with only 9.5 cubic feet available with the top up, and even less with it down.

The 2022 Acura TLX, despite its large exterior, offered a tight interior for four passengers. The back seat had decent headroom but limited legroom, while the front seats were comfortable with adjustable features in the Type S. The driving position was low, with well-marked controls. The touchpad interface for the infotainment system required acclimation, as did the pushbutton gear selector. Trunk space was mediocre at 13.5 cubic feet, with the double-wishbone suspension taking up space. Despite these limitations, the TLX's interior design and features provided a comfortable and stylish environment.

Technology

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class excelled in digital instrumentation and infotainment with its MBUX system. Two 12.3-inch screens provided high-resolution displays, with multiple interaction methods including touchscreen, voice assistant, and steering wheel controls. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and optional features like WiFi and augmented reality navigation. The Burmester surround-sound audio system added to the luxury experience, though the digital assistant could be inadvertently activated. Overall, MBUX offered a comprehensive and customizable infotainment experience.

The 2022 Acura TLX featured a simple and quick infotainment interface, though some typefaces were too small to read easily. The head-up display, available only with the Advance Package, allowed interaction with various functions from the steering wheel. The ELS Studio audio system with 17 speakers provided excellent sound quality, and standard features included voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Technology Package linked climate control to navigation, and standard features included LED headlights and a full suite of driver assistance features. Despite some limitations, the TLX offered a well-equipped and user-friendly technology package.

Safety

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class included standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Cabriolet featured pop-up rollbars for rollover protection, and Pre Safe systems prepared the cabin for potential collisions. Active Parking Assist and a surround-view camera system aided parking, while the optional Driver Assistance Package added advanced features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The package impressed with its comprehensive driver aids, enhancing safety and convenience.

The 2022 Acura TLX earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall score from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included knee airbags, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The TLX's safety features and ratings made it a reliable choice for safety-conscious buyers.
