Summary
With the redesigned 2022 Lexus NX, the luxury brand is aiming at a young, affluent, diverse, and tech-savvy customer. At the same time, the new 2022 NX is built upon the brand pillars that Lexus says will support all of its future products. They include bold design, advanced technology, electrification, and a dynamic tuning recipe called Lexus Driving Signature. Does the redesigned NX reflect those foundational building blocks? We went to Phoenix, Arizona to find out.

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year keeps Mercedes’ popular sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE-Class and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 1.2 inches to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE-Class also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully-electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent with the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

The 2022 Lexus NX, redesigned and available in four model series, offered a range of trim levels from base to Luxury, with prices starting at $37,950. The NX 350, particularly in F Sport and Luxury trims, stood out with its distinctive Lexus design, featuring a prominent spindle grille and refined styling details. The SUV was longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor, providing more passenger and cargo space. The interior boasted a minimalist design, with most functions integrated into a large touchscreen, which could be challenging to navigate quickly. Despite some ergonomic issues, the NX maintained high-quality materials, though some components, like the turn signal, felt less premium.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update, with changes to the grille and lighting elements. The GLE 450e, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG wheels, exuded a sophisticated presence. The interior, featuring Macchiato beige and black leather with walnut trim, offered a luxurious and spacious environment. Mercedes provided a wide array of customization options, including various interior colors and trims. The GLE's cabin was noted for its high quality and robust appearance, making it a strong contender in the luxury SUV segment.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered two electrified versions, with the NX 350h delivering 239 horsepower and the NX 450h+ providing 302 horsepower with a 36-mile electric range. The NX 350, with a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, produced 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The NX 350 F Sport featured additional driving modes and an adaptive suspension, enhancing its sporty character. While the NX 350 was smooth and responsive, it lacked the refinement of some German competitors. The NX's off-road capabilities were limited, with only 7.7 inches of ground clearance.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a diverse range of powertrains, from turbocharged four- and six-cylinders to a powerful twin-turbo V8 in the AMG GLE 63 S, producing 603 horsepower. The GLE 450e, with a combined output of 381 horsepower, provided a balanced performance with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GLE 450e could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and offered an estimated 40-mile electric range. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a comfortable ride even on rough roads. The GLE's steering was precise, making it easy to maneuver despite its size.

The 2022 Lexus NX offered increased interior space, though it felt cozy from the driver's seat. The front seats were comfortable, especially in F Sport trim, with thoughtful padding for added support. Rear passengers enjoyed ample space and amenities like air conditioning vents and USB ports. The NX's cargo space increased to 22.7 cubic feet, expandable to 46.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Luxury trim added ambient lighting with various themes, enhancing the cabin's atmosphere.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided generous space for five passengers, with excellent visibility and a light, airy cabin feel. The GLE 450e offered 33 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to rivals like the BMW X5. While the optional third row was limited to certain models, it was suitable only for children. The GLE 450e came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a power sunroof. Additional options included massaging seats, a head-up display, and a premium audio system, elevating the luxury experience.

The 2022 Lexus NX introduced the new Lexus Interface infotainment system, featuring large touchscreen displays, natural voice recognition, and cloud-based services. A 9.8-inch screen was standard, with a 14-inch upgrade available. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with various connected services. A 10-speaker sound system was standard, with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson option. The Voice Assistant and Intelligent Assistant systems allowed for natural voice commands, enhancing usability. However, the touchscreen collected fingerprints and lacked a tuning knob, which could be inconvenient.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, with dual 12.3-inch screens for the instrument panel and infotainment. The system supported touch commands, a control pad, and steering wheel buttons. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved voice command system. The head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. However, the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls could be overly sensitive, leading to unintended volume changes.

Additional safety features included blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a robust lineup of standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection.
