2022 BMW 4 Series Reviews Summary

After a one-year hiatus, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe returns. A direct competitor to the Audi A5 Sportback, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is based on the 4 Series coupe but takes the form of a five-door hatchback offering easier rear-seat access and some of the cargo utility you'll find in an SUV. Like other 4 Series models, the Gran Coupe comes in 430i ($45,200) and M440i ($58,200) specification. However, BMW still doesn't offer an M4 performance version of the Gran Coupe. The new Gran Coupe does, however, serve as the basis for the electric BMW i4.

2022 Porsche 911 Reviews Summary

The Porsche 911 has been the go-to sports car for over 50 years, and for good reason. Its focus on performance has incrementally improved every aspect of this small coupe over the generations. At the same time, that performance is easily approachable and doesn’t get in the way of everyday drivability.

Look and feel

The 2022 BMW 4 Series offered a variety of styling options, with the base 430i available in Sport or M Sport trims, and the M440i featuring an M Performance design with Shadowline trim. Initially, BMW shipped the 430i in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and the M440i in all-wheel drive (AWD), with additional configurations promised later. The Sunset Orange 430i test vehicle was loaded with numerous packages, bringing its price to $57,295, including destination charges. The redesigned 4 Series Gran Coupe was larger and more aerodynamic than its predecessor, but its design was marred by an oversized grille and awkward rear bumper trim. The flush-fitting door handles were also criticized for being difficult to use.

Inside, the 4 Series Gran Coupe featured a modern, asymmetrical design with high-quality materials. However, the test vehicle lacked luxury features like power-adjustable front seats and a premium sound system, which were only available on the M440i. Despite its loaded status, the 430i's omissions were surprising at its price point. The interior design was praised for its simplicity and quality, but the silver electroplated climate control buttons were hard to read during the day.

The 2022 Porsche 911 retained its iconic rear-engine layout and styling, evolving gradually over decades. Known as a "driver's car," the 911 prioritized performance, making some sacrifices for athleticism. Despite this, most 911 models were comfortable enough for daily driving. The 911's build quality and refined interior helped justify its high price. With the push towards electrification, the future of the 911's internal-combustion engine was uncertain, making it a potentially limited-time offer for enthusiasts.

Performance

The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, despite its weight, felt lively and engaging to drive. The 430i RWD test vehicle featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. The engine's responsiveness and the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission provided a credible 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. The car's Dynamic Handling Package, with M Sport brakes, high-performance tires, and an Adaptive M suspension, enhanced its performance on challenging roads like Deer Creek Canyon Road. The 430i's near-perfect weight distribution and precise steering made it a joy to drive, though the lack of a manual transmission was a drawback for some enthusiasts.

The 2022 Porsche 911's engine was as iconic as the car itself, with a horizontally-opposed six-cylinder "boxer" engine mounted behind the rear axle. This setup favored high-performance driving, allowing the car to rotate its tail into turns and increase overall speed. The 911 lineup included 10 variants, with the base Carrera's 3.0-liter turbocharged boxer-six producing 379 horsepower. The Carrera S increased output to 443 hp, while the GTS model offered 473 hp. The eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) was available on most models, with a seven-speed manual gearbox offered on S and GTS models. The GTS Cabriolet test vehicle, with the PDK transmission, reached 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and had a top speed of 192 mph. The 911's handling, braking, and ride quality were exceptional, making it a well-rounded sports car.

Form and function
2022 BMW 4 Series
5/10
2022 Porsche 911
8/10

The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, while more practical than its two-door counterparts, still had a cramped interior. The low stance, intrusive roof pillars, and small door openings made entry and exit difficult. The lack of power-adjustable front seats was a notable omission, especially for multi-driver households. The Gran Coupe's hatchback design offered 16.6 cubic feet of trunk space, expandable to 45.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. However, it was not as practical as the discontinued 3 Series Sports Wagon.

The 2022 Porsche 911's interior blended historic personality with modern sensibilities. The large analog tachometer and 10.9-inch infotainment touchscreen were highlights, though the touchscreen's low placement required taking eyes off the road. The standard seats were comfortable, with sport seats offering improved lateral support. The rear seats were small and better suited for cargo overflow, as the front trunk offered only 4.6 cubic feet of space. Interior storage was limited, but the convertible's fabric top could be stowed or deployed in 12 seconds, providing a quiet and comfortable open-air experience.

Technology

The 2022 BMW 4 Series featured the iDrive 7 infotainment system, part of the standard Live Cockpit Professional setup. This included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen display. The system offered multiple control options, including physical controls, steering wheel functions, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a cloud-based navigation system were standard. Connected services included BMW TeleServices, BMW ConnectedDrive, and Connected Package Professional, with features like remote engine starting and Digital Key technology. However, the 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system and head-up display were only available on the M440i.

The 2022 Porsche 911 prioritized driving technology over infotainment. The touchscreen was mounted lower on the dash, requiring drivers to take their eyes off the road. Apple CarPlay was wireless, but Android Auto required a USB cable. The base audio system was underwhelming, with the optional Bose system recommended. The Sport Chrono package added performance features like a lap timer. The Premium package included adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Overall, the 911's technology focused on enhancing the driving experience.

Safety

The 2022 BMW 4 Series included BMW Assist eCall, SOS Emergency Request, and an enhanced automatic collision notification system. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. The M440i offered additional features through the Driving Assistance Professional Package, including adaptive cruise control, lane-centering assistance, and emergency stop assistance. The M440i also had optional Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with LaserLight and automated parking systems.

The 2022 Porsche 911 had not been evaluated by NHTSA or IIHS. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The optional Premium package added adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera, and blind-spot monitoring. Other options included night vision and an integrated dashcam. The 911's safety features were limited compared to conventional vehicles, but this was typical for sports cars.
