2021 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

Volvo may be known for sensible station wagons, but the XC90 SUV is the Swedish automaker’s de facto flagship. The current generation debuted design features, technology, and powertrains that have since found their way into most other Volvo models. Several years into the current-generation model’s lifecycle, the XC90 is no longer a trendsetter, but remains Volvo’s contender in the competitive midsize luxury SUV segment, with the automaker’s typical emphasis on safety features.

The current-generation XC90 launched for the 2016 model year, so most competitors—including the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class—have been updated or redesigned since then. The Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator didn’t even exist when this generation of XC90 launched.

A redesigned version is expected to arrive soon, so changes to the 2021 XC90 are minimal. All 2021 Volvo models are now limited to 112 mph for safety reasons and get Care Key, which lets owners limit the top speed before loaning the car out to a friend or family member. The XC90 also gets a handful of newly standard tech features, and some small cosmetic changes.

Volvo offers the XC90 in three trim levels—Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription—with three powertrain options: T5 and T6 gasoline engines, and the T8 plug-in hybrid. Our test car was a range-topping T8 Recharge Inscription, combining the top Inscription trim level with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, which has the highest output of the three.

2022 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

Though Acura still sells cars, the automaker’s SUVs are the most popular with consumers. The 2022 Acura RDX is the smaller of the company’s two sport-utes, equipped with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an available torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, and five trim levels offered to buyers as packages. This year, Acura freshens the 2022 RDX with new styling, a quieter cabin, additional equipment, and refined ride and handling characteristics for some versions.

Look and feel
2021 Volvo XC90
9/10
2022 Acura RDX
9/10

The 2021 Volvo XC90 made its mark with a design that transformed Volvo's brand image, maintaining traditional elements while infusing modern aesthetics. The XC90 kept its recognizable boxy profile and blunt front end, incorporating a rectangular grille similar to older models, but softened the lines and added more chrome, replacing much of the unpainted plastic seen in earlier versions. Noteworthy are the LED headlights featuring "Thor’s Hammer" daytime running lights, seamlessly integrating with the vehicle's updated design ethos.

In contrast, the 2022 Acura RDX introduced subtler design tweaks inspired by the larger MDX model. These included updates to the grille surround and the front and rear bumpers, as well as new wheel designs and color options. The unique RDX PMC Edition featured exclusive Long Beach Blue Pearl paint and a striking Orchid white interior, highlighting Acura’s push towards a more exclusive market segment with this limited-production hand-built edition.

Performance
2021 Volvo XC90
7/10
2022 Acura RDX
8/10

Both the 2021 Volvo XC90 and the 2022 Acura RDX boasted robust performances with their turbocharged engines. The XC90 offered three powertrains: a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 250 horsepower in the T5 model, a 316-horsepower version additionally supercharged in the T6, and a 400-horsepower plug-in hybrid T8 configuration. Despite its power, the XC90's performance was sometimes limited by the reliance on the smaller engine to provide substantial power, which wasn't as flexible as competitors' larger engines.

The RDX, on the other hand, sported a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, delivering 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. This allowed the RDX to offer a spirited driving experience, with its 10-speed automatic transmission and available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system enhancing its agility and stability in various driving conditions. The RDX also featured an updated Integrated Dynamics System and adaptive-damping suspension for a more differentiated driving mode experience, emphasizing comfort and sportiness.

Form and function
2021 Volvo XC90
6/10
2022 Acura RDX
8/10

In terms of form and function, the interiors of both models catered to luxury and practicality but with differing priorities evident in their configurations. The XC90, offered in six or seven-seat layouts, provided ample headroom and legroom across three rows albeit with a tighter third row. Cargo space was somewhat limited with all seats up, offering 11.2 cubic feet which expanded to a maximum of 64.1 cubic feet.

The RDX’s design capitalized on its compact SUV classification to provide ample space for adults and cargo in a stylish environment. It featured 29.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which extended to 58.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The RDX exhibited a sportier driving position and included innovative, albeit complex, interior controls like the dual-function touchpad for infotainment.

Technology
2021 Volvo XC90
8/10
2022 Acura RDX
6/10

Technology in the XC90 and RDX took distinct approaches. Volvo’s Sensus system emphasized ease of use with a tablet-like touchscreen interface paired with minimal physical controls, aligning with the vehicle's minimalist interior design philosophy. Conversely, Acura’s True Touchpad Interface was intricate, requiring a learning curve to master its distinctive input method, which aimed to reduce driver distraction from traditional touchscreens.

Safety
2021 Volvo XC90
9/10
2022 Acura RDX
8/10
Safety ratings and features were strong points for both models. The XC90 continued Volvo’s legacy of safety with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance technologies and a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS for its non-hybrid models. The 2022 RDX also boasted impressive safety credentials, with Acura enhancing its structure for better side-impact protection and extending its AcuraWatch technologies to include new features like pedestrian detection.
