2022 Acura RDX vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE was a mixed bag in terms of aesthetics. While it had an aggressive front with a sloping hood, the design seemed to lose its edge past the A-pillar, making it reminiscent of older models. Despite efforts to enhance its appearance with flat taillights and a contoured rear, the GLE struggled to match the visual appeal of its competitors like the BMW X5 or the Porsche Cayenne. However, the interior was a different story. Mercedes revamped the GLE's cabin, offering a luxurious experience with high-quality materials and a striking red and black color scheme. The interior was both a visual and tactile delight, although some elements like the gear selector felt less robust.

In contrast, the 2022 Acura RDX featured subtle styling updates inspired by its larger sibling, the MDX. The changes included a refreshed grille surround and updated bumper designs, along with new wheel designs and paint colors. The RDX PMC Edition stood out with its exclusive Long Beach Blue Pearl paint and Orchid white interior. The A-Spec Advance package, which we tested, boasted high-quality materials and a quieter cabin, enhancing its appeal. Despite some reservations about the new vertical air inlets, the RDX maintained a stylish presence, offering more flair than many of its rivals.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE excelled in performance with its advanced air suspension and turbocharged engines. The GLE 350 featured a 255 hp engine, while the GLE 450 offered a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 362 hp. The AMG GLE 53 took it further with 429 hp, thanks to an electric supercharger. The GLE 580 and AMG GLE 63 S boasted even more power, with 483 hp and 603 hp, respectively. The GLE's hybrid system provided additional power and seamless engine start-stop functionality, although it didn't significantly improve fuel efficiency. The GLE's ride quality and steering were exceptional, making it feel agile despite its size. It could tow up to 7,700 pounds, adding to its versatility.

The 2022 Acura RDX, powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivered 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission provided smooth shifts, and the SH-AWD system enhanced handling, especially on winding roads. The RDX's adaptive-damping suspension offered a comfortable ride in Comfort mode and greater responsiveness in Sport mode. Despite its enjoyable driving dynamics, the RDX didn't quite match the thrill of its German competitors. Fuel economy was a concern, as we averaged 20.6 mpg, below the EPA rating of 23 mpg.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered spacious interiors, with most models accommodating five passengers, while an optional third row increased capacity to seven. The Coupe variant, however, was limited to five seats. Cargo space was generous, with 34 cubic feet behind the second row and 75 cubic feet with all rows folded. The Coupe's sloping roofline reduced cargo capacity to 23 and 61 cubic feet, respectively. The MBUX infotainment system improved usability, although some controls required familiarization.
