2021 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Full-size SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator represent the smallest slice of the luxury SUV market. They're the heaviest, hugest, and fanciest people movers sold by mainstream automakers—and you can count them all on two hands. The Navigator, a popular nameplate since 1998, was redesigned in dramatic fashion for 2018. In its fourth model year, this Navigator still delights us as we test newer competitors costing at or above its $77,000 starting price. Foreign nameplates offer no equal to the Navigator, and it's not for sheer size or a desire to lift up Lincoln that we say this is one of the best American vehicles, among both trucks and cars, ever made.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Reviews Summary

The summer of 2022 has been a doozy. Gas prices went sky high and heat waves roasted Americans. If you’re rethinking the purchase of a three-row SUV and trying to find a fuel-efficient solution that emits greenhouse gas emissions only part of the time, the seven-passenger Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid might be a good solution. It doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as other Pacificas do, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain supplying an EPA-rated 32 miles of electric range before the gasoline V6 engine fires up to deliver 30 mpg in combined driving.

2021 Lincoln Navigator
9/10
2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
5/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator was a testament to luxury and elegance, shedding its past resemblance to the Ford Expedition. With its unique design elements, such as the rectilinear shapes defining the grille and headlights, and the Monochromatic Package's body-color accents, the Navigator stood out as a sophisticated three-ton vehicle. Its Pristine White exterior, complemented by black wheels and an illuminated Lincoln logo, made it a striking presence during winter tests. Inside, the Navigator impressed with its seven color palettes and attention to detail, from the layered wood trim to the floating center console. The materials were top-notch, with tight panel gaps and luxurious Black Label trims offering even more textures and softer leather. The Perfect Position seats, adjustable in 30 different ways, added to the Navigator's appeal, making it one of the most comfortable large SUVs available.

In contrast, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid embraced its minivan identity, offering practicality and efficiency. Despite its rounded, flowing design appearing somewhat dated, the Pacifica Hybrid was a unique offering as a plug-in hybrid minivan. It provided a comfortable interior with black Nappa premium leather and a range of features, including a Uconnect Theater rear-seat entertainment system. The Pacifica Hybrid's pricing started at $49,095 for the base Touring L, with the Limited trim costing $54,095. The test vehicle, equipped with additional features, reached an MSRP of $57,680. While the Pacifica Hybrid's styling didn't hide its minivan nature, it offered a compelling package for those prioritizing efficiency and practicality.

Performance
2021 Lincoln Navigator
8/10
2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
8/10

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator was powered by a formidable twin-turbo V6 engine, producing 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, provided the Navigator with impressive acceleration and a satisfying engine note. The Navigator's towing capacity was substantial, with 8,300 pounds for 4WD models and 8,700 pounds for RWD models. However, its fuel economy was less impressive, averaging in the teens, aligning with the EPA-estimated 17-mpg combined rating. While the Navigator's adaptive dampers were standard, its suspension felt less refined compared to competitors like the Cadillac Escalade. Despite some shortcomings in steering and braking feel, the Navigator excelled in highway refinement and power, with paddle shifters adding a touch of sportiness.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid featured a plug-in hybrid drivetrain based on a 3.6-liter V6 engine, combined with a dual-motor electric drive system. This setup delivered a total system output of 260 horsepower, with immediate torque from the electric drive system. The Pacifica Hybrid could travel up to 32 miles on electric power alone, making it ideal for short commutes and errands. The regenerative braking system helped recharge the battery, contributing to an impressive average fuel economy of 37.1 mpg during testing. While the Pacifica Hybrid lacked the powertrain modes found in some competitors, its seamless transition between electric and gasoline power was noteworthy. However, the driving experience was less engaging, with light steering and unremarkable regenerative brakes. Despite this, the Pacifica Hybrid's powertrain efficiency was a standout feature.

Form and function
2021 Lincoln Navigator

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator offered a spacious interior, accommodating up to eight passengers with its optional bench seating. Its boxy shape provided ample cargo space, with 19 cubic feet behind the third row, 57 behind the second, and a total of 103 cubic feet. The long-wheelbase Navigator L variant offered even more storage capacity. The Navigator's second-row seats were heated, and a three-zone climate control system ensured comfort for all passengers. However, the lack of side window shades and electrically reclining second-row seats were noted drawbacks. The front seats were exceptionally comfortable, with numerous adjustments and massage programs. Despite its size, the Navigator's large windows and high driving position offered excellent visibility, though parking remained challenging.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, with three comfortable rows of seats and generous cargo space. The Pacifica Hybrid Limited featured triple-zone automatic climate control, quality leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. Storage options were abundant, with extra shelves, a large floor tray, and a long storage bin behind the center console. The second-row seats were more comfortable than the standard Pacifica's Stow n' Go chairs, offering adjustable legroom. The third-row seat provided reasonable comfort, with cupholders and USB ports for passengers. The Pacifica Hybrid offered 32.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 87.5 cubic feet with the third-row seats folded. Removing the second-row seats increased cargo capacity to 140.5 cubic feet, surpassing many SUVs.

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator's technology offerings included a 10-inch touchscreen, which felt small compared to newer competitors. While the infotainment system was intuitive, it lacked wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The 20-speaker Revel Ultima stereo provided good sound quality, but not exceptional. The Navigator featured onboard 4G WiFi, wireless device charging, and a smartwatch app, with remote app functions included for five years. The rear entertainment system offered Roku media streaming and various connectivity options. Despite some limitations, the Navigator's technology was user-friendly and straightforward.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was equipped with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. The system offered appealing graphics, a simple user interface, and quick response times. Uconnect 5 supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The available FamCam overhead camera system allowed parents to monitor rear-seat passengers. While the voice recognition technology had room for improvement, the system's overall operation was satisfactory. The Pacifica Hybrid's 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system required adjustments for optimal sound quality. The rear-seat entertainment system offered Amazon Fire TV, allowing passengers to stream or download content. The Pacifica Hybrid also featured a surround-view camera system and parking assist, enhancing convenience and safety.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator received a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with four stars for rollover resistance in 4WD models and three stars in RWD models. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had not rated the Navigator in its current generation. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and auto high beams. Adaptive cruise control was optional, though it lacked advanced lane-centering capabilities.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid boasted an extensive list of standard safety features, including a rear-seat reminder system. While adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-keeping assist were standard, the system required refinement in certain situations. The Pacifica Hybrid earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The only concern was the four-star rating for frontal-impact protection.
