2021 Kia K5 Reviews Summary

Sedans are now the most exciting new cars in the mainstream market. They are to crossovers today what craft beer was in the early 2000s. They’re not on every corner anymore because Americans prefer trucks over cars, but sedans like the 2021 Kia K5 are refreshing to see, surprisingly good to drive, and will make you look cultured and smart without having to try. The K5—and its new name—replaces the Optima and upgrades nearly everything in the pursuit of style and performance. It’s one of the best midsize sedans out there.

Look and feel
2021 Kia K5
8/10
2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
9/10

The 2021 Kia K5 marked a transformative shift for Kia’s sedan segment, serving as a stark departure from the company's previous models, such as the drab early Optima and the unattractive Amanti. With the K5, Kia embraced a bold new identity, devoting meticulous attention to design elements that resulted in a fastback sedan. Designed by Peter Schreyer, the man who played a significant role in reviving Audi’s design language, the K5 boasted an eye-catching exterior. Our test car, styled in GT-Line trim, flaunted a distinctive Wolf Gray paint with fiery red seats, reminiscent of the sporty Audi A5 Sportback. Polished black trim, intricate LED taillights, and a honeycomb grille with Z-shaped amber LED running lights further accentuated its sporty appeal. The interior was equally compelling, featuring a driver-focused cockpit, polished black trim, and high-quality materials that elevated it beyond what one might expect from a mid-market sedan.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offered a timeless elegance that paid homage to its storied lineage while embracing modernity with finesse. Despite its 2021 makeover, the S-Class retained its sleek, elongated silhouette and luxurious presence. The long distance between the front axle and dashboard added an aura of elegance that was unmistakable. Inside, the S-Class showcased a waterfall of open-pore wood trim and a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen at the center of the curved front dash, flanked by a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The interior materials exuded quality, meticulously fitted and assembled. Classic Mercedes-Benz elements like the star hood ornament and luxurious finishes were omnipresent, affirming its status as a top-tier executive sedan.

Performance

8/10

The 2021 Kia K5's performance did not fully align with its visually aggressive GT-Line trim. In testing, it fell short against primary competitors like the Volkswagen GLI. Its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, generating 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, provided competent but not thrilling acceleration. The eight-speed automatic transmission offered reasonable responsiveness, though it exhibited some rough shifts. The GT model promised more with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering an impressive 290 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. However, issues arose with power delivery, as it was channeled through a front-wheel-drive system without advanced handling enhancements. AWD was available on lower trims but not on the high-powered GT. Fuel economy was commendable, with the base engine delivering up to 31 mpg combined on FWD models, while AWD models achieved slightly lower figures.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class presented a markedly different performance profile, defined by a harmonious blend of power and refinement. The S500 came equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid engine, producing 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, supplemented by an EQ Boost system that added 21 hp and 184 lb-ft briefly. This combination enabled a seamless and potent performance. The S580 upped the ante with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, harnessing the same EQ Boost system for even higher output. Both models utilized a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic AWD. Despite their considerable heft, the S500 and S580 achieved 0-60 mph times of 4.9 and 4.4 seconds, respectively. The S500 achieved up to 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, while the S580 managed 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, reflecting their high-performance capabilities.

Form and function

Despite its sleek, fastback profile, the 2021 Kia K5 excelled in providing interior comfort. It comfortably accommodated two adults in the back, with sufficient headroom and legroom for six-footers thanks to clever design touches like scalloped roof sections and front seatbacks. The front seats were firm and supportive, ideal for long drives. However, the absence of rear air vents was a notable drawback for a 2021 model. Storage space was practical, with a 16-cubic-foot trunk that could be expanded by folding the rear seats.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class set a high bar for executive sedans, ensuring ample space, comfort, and functionality. The cabin was a sanctuary of luxury, equipped with panoramic sunroof, powered sun blinds, and meticulously designed materials. The front seats featured advanced functions like massage, heating, and ventilation, ensuring long journeys remained comfortable. Rear passengers enjoyed equal attention with optional multicontour seats, heated features, and an MBUX rear-seat entertainment system. Cargo space was generous, with a 13.8-cubic-foot trunk, albeit smaller than the Kia K5's, it was lushly carpeted and thoughtfully designed to maximize usability.

Technology

The 2021 Kia K5 impressed with its accessible and modern technology, particularly with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Setting up these systems was straightforward, although minor connectivity glitches occurred. The GT-Line trim added notable tech upgrades like a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and an advanced infotainment system with voice command capabilities. However, features like heated seats were only accessible in higher trims, which was a downside for those seeking comprehensive comfort without opting for the top variants.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stood out with an array of cutting-edge technologies. Its centerpiece was the 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen for the MBUX infotainment system, delivering unparalleled image quality and energy efficiency. The 12.3-inch LED virtual instrument panel and an optional 3D instrument cluster provided detailed and customizable display options. The augmented video for navigation and available augmented reality head-up display enhanced the driving experience with clear and futuristic directives. Audio fidelity was top-tier, thanks to the Burmester 3D Surround sound, upgradeable to the 4D Surround system for an immersive auditory experience. Advanced powertrain technologies like EQ Boost and rear-axle steering underscored the S-Class's commitment to innovation.

Safety

The 2021 Kia K5's safety credentials were robust, with high expectations for top ratings from NHTSA and IIHS due to its strong chassis and body structure. Standard safety features included forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. More advanced features like blind-spot monitoring with Safe Exit Assist and Junction Turning were available on higher trims, offering comprehensive protection for occupants.

As a leader in automotive safety, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was equipped with numerous standard and optional safety systems. It featured Magic Vision Control for precise windshield cleaning, an extensive suite of driver assistance systems, including active distance assist Distronic, active steering assist, and active brake assist, among others. Rear-passenger airbags and occupant protection enhancements were also available, reflecting the S-Class's focus on safety for all occupants.
