2021 Audi Q5 Reviews Summary

Audi has made a commitment to electrification across its lineup. That takes the form of all-electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). The Q5, which entered its second generation in the 2018 model year, has offered a PHEV powertrain since 2020 in the Audi Q5 55 TFSI e quattro.

2021 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

Even in a grim year, Honda is selling a staggering number of CR-Vs. The CR-V is the best-selling Honda by far. It’s also the second best-selling compact SUV, just behind the Toyota RAV4. And it's the fifth best-selling vehicle in the U.S., and if you take out all the commercial sales of full-size pickups it’s one of the two best-selling vehicles year in and year out.

So it’s hard to argue against the CR-V formula. Honda’s been at this almost as long as crossovers have been a thing, launching the CR-V in 1997—a year after the RAV4 debuted.

The funny thing is, aside from sales volume, there’s only one thing the CR-V particularly excels at. Aesthetics are subjective, but it would be hard to argue the CR-V is the best looking vehicle in its class. It’s not the cheapest. It’s not the best equipped, especially at the middle to lower trim levels. It’s not the fastest, nor is it the quietest, or the most fuel efficient. It’s not even the most reliable, showing up nowhere in J.D. Power's Most Reliable list.

So what makes it so appealing to American consumers? Let’s see if we can figure that out.

Look and feel
2021 Audi Q5
8/10
2021 Honda CR-V
6/10

The 2021 Audi Q5 presented a striking appearance that merged traditional Audi aesthetics with its own distinctive flair. The exterior was marked by a pronounced Audi Singleframe grille, flanked by LED headlights that contributed to a broad, imposing front view. Horizontal design elements across the grille and body accentuated the vehicle’s width, while crisp lines along the body enhanced its modern appeal. The rear was equally assertive with large, bold taillights, establishing an overall classy and contemporary look. The plug-in version boasted S-Line trim enhancements and optional 20-inch wheels, which further distinguished it from the standard model.

Internally, the Q5 maintained a sleek, modern design characterized by an organized layout of controls and high-quality materials, including real wood and metal, which met in well-defined lines. The cabin’s design was harmonious and featured a 10.1-inch touchscreen thoughtfully positioned for easy driver access. The seating was luxurious across both rows, with leather surfaces and substantial space, enhancing comfort and visual appeal.

In contrast, the 2021 Honda CR-V had a more generic external design, reflective of the broader compact crossover segment. Its appearance did not deviate significantly from competitors, with a standard “daylight opening” and modest grille differences. Most CR-Vs were available in subdued color choices, though the Aegean Blue Metallic and Radiant Red added some vibrancy at higher trim levels. The interior of the CR-V opted for practicality and function, with straightforward cloth or leather seating and a modern, angular design. While it offered less visual impact than the Q5, it provided ample space and utility, particularly at higher trims with features like power tailgates and roof rails.

Performance

2021 Honda CR-V
6/10

The 2021 Audi Q5 Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) enhanced its standard model with an additional 114 horsepower from a 14.1-kWh battery, offering a total output of 362 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain achieved a 0-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds and offered multiple driving modes to optimize performance and efficiency, including a purely electric range of up to 20 miles. Its handling was precise, with a sporty yet comfortable ride quality, and featured advanced steering and suspension systems that supported its dynamic capabilities.

Conversely, the Honda CR-V provided a more subdued driving experience with a consistent 190 horsepower across all trims. Its performance was reliable for daily driving, with a 0-60 mph time of around 7.8 seconds. The CR-V utilized a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offered optional all-wheel drive. Its handling was predictable, with a focus on comfort and stability rather than sportiness, suited to its role as a family vehicle.

Form and function

The Audi Q5 cleverly accommodated its battery without sacrificing cargo space, offering up to 53.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. It provided ample legroom and headroom, making it comfortable for adults in both seating rows. The vehicle was equipped with practical storage solutions and luxury amenities, particularly in higher trims, which included heated and ventilated seats.

The Honda CR-V emphasized spaciousness and practicality, with 75.8 cubic feet of cargo space available when the rear seats were down. It offered slightly more passenger volume than its closest competitors and featured multiple ways to access the cargo area, depending on the trim level. The CR-V also included roof rails on its highest trim, enhancing its utility for various transport needs.

Technology

Audi equipped the Q5 with a state-of-the-art infotainment system featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen and the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus, which included customizable displays. Additional technological features included an Integrated Toll Module, advanced navigation linked with the hybrid system, and an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, enhancing both convenience and driving pleasure.

The Honda CR-V’s technology varied significantly by trim, with the base model offering minimal features. Higher trims included a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and increased connectivity options. The highest trim added a premium audio system and navigation, though overall, the CR-V’s tech offerings were more functional than cutting-edge.

Safety
2021 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 was equipped with comprehensive safety features, although its PHEV model had not been rated at the time. It offered advanced driver-assistance systems and received high safety ratings for its gasoline model. The CR-V excelled in safety, earning top marks from both the NHTSA and IIHS, with the exception of its headlights. It featured the Honda Sensing suite of safety technologies as standard across all trims, a significant advantage in making safety accessible.
