Summary

Since the second half of the 20th century, each decade has had a hot-topic family car, and, as we’ve noted in a number of reviews this year, the crossover is our current darling vehicle. Before the crossover, there were big, truck-based SUVs. Before that, there were station wagons.

And for the past 35 years, there's always been the minivan.

The Dodge Caravan has been widely considered the Patient Zero of the minivan segment. From there, seemingly everyone joined the party, including Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chevy, GMC, Volkswagen, Oldsmobile, Ford, and more. Heck, even Mercury had a “Nautica Edition” version of the Villager.

The minivan was king once, the crossover is king now, and some other type of vehicle will likely dominate in the near future. But in all this, the 7- and 8-passenger minivans will always represent the ultimate in versatility. The crossover is an image-forward fad with a dash of usability, but the minivan continues to prove itself as the pinnacle of practicality.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna is neither the newest nor flashiest minivan out there, but when you absolutely need space for people and gear, there’s nothing better. Additionally, the Sienna is the only minivan to offer all-wheel drive (AWD), which is something specifically desired by many car buyers.

The Land Rover Range Rover is the definitive word in “ultra-luxury sport utility vehicle.” It’s the perfect example of a no-compromise SUV, delivering superlative cabin space, luxury appointments, power, and capability.

Believe it or not, the current fourth-generation Range Rover is getting long in the tooth. A fifth-generation Range Rover is around the corner, so how has Land Rover kept its flagship SUV relevant? With incremental updates through the years. In addition to new infotainment and safety technologies, Land Rover has continued to expand the powertrain lineup, to the point where there are now six different powertrain options. So does the Range Rover continue to set the standard for 4x4 luxury? Read on to find out.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna, part of its third generation, had been around since 2011 and received an update in 2018. Despite these updates, the 2020 model still felt somewhat dated, with occasional upscale touches. The front doors emitted a hollow "thud" when closed, a detail that many automakers typically refine. The instrument panel appeared to be from Toyota's 2010 parts bin, though its simplicity made the controls user-friendly. The Sienna offered a range of trims, from the base L with 17-inch alloy wheels and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, to the Limited Premium with leather seats and a JBL audio system. The SE trim, recommended by CarGurus, featured a power rear liftgate, 19-inch alloy wheels, and leather upholstery. The Nightshade Edition added dark accents and wheels for those prioritizing style.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover, with its "best of everything" reputation, traced its origins to the rugged Series I off-roader. The current generation, introduced in 2012, offered multiple variations, including HSE, Autobiography, and SVAutobiography Dynamic trims. Standard features included leather seating, a panoramic sunroof, and the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch screens. The HSE trim added 20-way power-adjustable front seats and upgraded leather upholstery. The Autobiography trim made many options standard, such as massaging front seats, while the SVAutobiography featured unique styling touches and nearly every available feature. The Range Rover's luxurious interior and advanced technology made it a standout in its class.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 296 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It offered a Sport mode for enhanced throttle and shift response, and a manual mode for its 3,500-pound towing capacity. The Sienna's front-wheel-drive (FWD) version delivered the best fuel economy, with 19 mpg city, 26 highway, and 21 combined. All-wheel drive (AWD) was available on all trims except the base L, providing better traction in inclement conditions. The Sienna's low center of gravity and broad base contributed to decent handling dynamics, though its steering response felt twitchy at higher speeds.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover offered a diverse selection of powertrains. The base engine was a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 355 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. The HSE trim featured a non-hybrid version of the same engine, delivering 395 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. A turbodiesel V6 engine was also available, rated at 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The P525 and Autobiography trims came with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, producing 518 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. The SV Autobiography Dynamic trim, the performance variant, had a 5.0-liter V8 tuned to 557 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. All engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The Range Rover's electronic air suspension and automatic load leveling provided a comfortable ride, while its Terrain Response System offered various drive modes for different conditions.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna excelled in cargo space, offering 150 cubic feet, surpassing competitors like the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey. However, accessing this space required removing the second-row seats, which could be cumbersome with the bench option. The third row folded seamlessly into the floor, but getting into the backseat was challenging due to the awkward folding of the second-row seat cushion. Toyota offered mobility access features, such as the Auto Access Seat, making it easier for those needing mobility conversions.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover offered two wheelbase options: LWB and SWB. The SWB version provided 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, while the LWB model offered 77.5 cubic feet. Both versions had 34.5 cubic feet with the rear seats up. The Range Rover's hands-free power liftgate featured a unique two-piece configuration, facilitating loading and tailgating. The center-console compartment was convenient, and the digital control panel allowed for storage beneath it. The front and rear doors had decently sized cargo compartments and cupholders.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna's base L trim came with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, supporting Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay. Standard tech features included Bluetooth connectivity, five USB ports, and a WiFi hotspot with a 6-month trial. The Limited trim added navigation and a JBL 10-speaker premium audio system. The Driver Easy Speak system allowed the driver to communicate with rear passengers through the rear speakers, enhancing convenience for families.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo system, consisting of two touchscreens. The top screen managed navigation, phone, stereo, and smartphone connectivity, while the lower screen controlled climate, seat settings, and Terrain Response. The system's integrated dials changed functions based on the selected menu. The Range Rover also had a fully digital instrument panel and an optional head-up display, providing a modern and customizable driving experience.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna came standard with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P) suite, including lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, and dynamic cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring was optional on lower trims and standard on XLE and Limited trims. The Sienna earned five stars in NHTSA crash testing and a Good rating in many IIHS areas, with its driver-assistance features receiving a Superior rating.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover included standard safety features such as low-speed automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Optional features included a 360-degree parking camera, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Range Rover's safety features provided comprehensive protection, though some competitors offered more standard equipment.
