Overview

The Nissan Leaf was the first mass-market all-electric vehicle. It was introduced in 2010, and the second generation hit the market for the 2018 model year. Five years later, Nissan is evidently still satisfied with the Leaf’s looks, as it gets only minor design changes for 2023.
The big news for 2023 is that Nissan has streamlined the Leaf lineup. Where there once were five trims, there are now just two: S and SV Plus. The previously available S Plus, SV, and SL Plus options have all been dropped.
The 2023 Nissan Leaf S comes with a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 110-kW electric motor. This setup, which was also last year’s base powertrain option, produces 147 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The Leaf SV Plus, meanwhile, gets a 60-kWh battery and a 160-kW electric motor, a system which makes 214 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Range estimates are not available yet, but Nissan says they will likely be close to 2022’s, which would mean up to 149 miles for the Leaf S and up to 226 miles for the Leaf SV Plus. Both Leaf trims are front-wheel drive.
Exterior changes are pretty minimal overall. The 2023 Leaf gets an updated front end, grille, bumper molding, and headlights, and Nissan notes that the tire deflectors, rear under-defuser, and rear spoiler have been reshaped for improved aerodynamics. The most salient alterations are the new five-spoke 17-inch wheels, which are standard on the Leaf SV Plus, and the new Nissan badge on both Leaf trims. The badge has been brought up to date with Nissan’s latest design language and is now illuminated.
The new Nissan badge appears on the steering wheel as well. The Leaf interior features a new start-up video which greets drivers and passengers from the display. The standard black cloth seats are trimmed in gray on the Leaf S and in gloss black on the Leaf SV Plus.
Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite of safety features is standard on all Nissan Leafs, providing automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, among others. The Leaf SV Plus gets Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist system of driver aids, which includes Intelligent Cruise Control, steering assist, and a stop-and-hold function.
Every 2023 Nissan Leaf comes with a limited warranty covering the battery pack for eight years or 100,000 miles. An additional limited warranty protects buyers against excessive loss in battery capacity for the same distance and length of time.
Nissan actually lowered the price of the Leaf for the 2022 model year, and we’re sure no one will be surprised to hear that proved to be a popular decision. Though it hasn’t confirmed specifics for 2023 yet, Nissan says it intends to maintain a similar pricing scheme in the coming year.
