About 2019 Kia Niro EV
overall
The Niro EV follows the Soul as Kia's second battery-electric vehicle, but it's still a mostly ordinary hatchback.
Brand-new for 2019, the Niro EV is the first electric Kia to crack 200 miles of range. It’s based on the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid, which Kia introduced in 2017, but it forgoes the gasoline engine (and the affordable price tag). Most Americans won’t ever see a Niro EV because it’s sold in only 12 states and you can’t even ask a dealer in the ineligible 38 states to order one. That didn’t stop us from putting more than 500 miles on this compact hatch, temporarily rewiring daily life to accommodate an electric car in freezing weather. New England is a prime market for the Niro EV. So how does it stand up to the simplest of tasks, like a two-hour drive to Boston?

For the price, the range is incredible. Its comfortable, quiet, and has straight forward controls. They sell a lot of these in Canada and Europe, and those reviews suggest that the reliability seems good. The parts are shared with the Soul EV, the Kona, and the Ionic and none have reported issues. The cold weather package includes a heat pump which is clutch in the winter.

We had a 2013 Nissan Leaf which we bought just to see if we liked the EV technology - four years ago. We were supposed to keep it for a year or less but we liked it so much we kept it. So the Niro EV is our second EV. So far the Niro EV has exceeded our expectations. The technological advances over the six model years are evident. The car is fast enough that I havent even put it into the faster Sport Mode yet. We used the car for twelve days without charging after we got it home, when we used to charge the Leaf almost every night.

I traded in a MINI for the Kona, so am having to get used to something larger. Only had it for three days, but so far: It handles well, easy to drive, quiet and smooth, and the various sensors help with finding the edges that are further out than Im used to. Apart from the basics of driving, its a computer on wheels, and Im enjoying learning about all the safety and comfort feature. So far that has been easy - the dash info is clear to understand, menus are mostly self-explanatory, and I was able to set up the hands-free phone in a couple of minutes. Im also enjoying ignoring gas stations and plugging it in at home to fill up :). Sorta wish it wasnt so cold in winter without the heater on, and that the sunroof opened. It doesnt have quite theTeslas range, but then its price is considerably lower, plus its a hatchback not a sedan so a lot more convenient. Overall very happy with it.

For the price and a 240 mile range on a single price it’s perfect. It was about 20k cheaper than my Mach-E but my girlfriend loves it and I’m happy with the monthly payments.
