In a crowded midsize sedan market, the 2009 Nissan Altima stands out for its sporty ride. This front-wheel-drive sedan makes up in fun what it lacks in the Accord's refinement or the Camry's upscale interior. For 2009, the Altima makes few changes, adding automatic door locks on each of its five trims and three new exterior color choices.

The sedan offers two engine choices and an economical Hybrid. The 2.5-liter DOHC inline four puts out 175 hp and sits in the Base and S trims. Paired with a either a 6-speed manual or CVT (continuously variable transmission), fuel economy averages 23/32 mpg city/highway. The more powerful 3.5-liter V6 gets 270 hp, with 0-60 times reported as low as 6.3 seconds. Though fuel economy numbers drop, it still averages a decent 19/26 mpg. The CVT garners mixed reviews, with some critics preferring the manual, while others say it is more responsive than the 6-speed. Finally, the Hybrid combines the 2.5-liter with a 40-hp electric motor, for a 198-hp output and 35/33 mpg. Able to run on the electric motor at low speeds, the gas engine at higher speeds, or a combination of the two, it features regenerative braking and comes with an electronic CVT. However, the Hybrid is offered in only eight states, those that meet California's strict emission standards.

As Nissan's best-seller, the Altima seeks to provide fun and upscale comfort in one package. Last year's interior refinements improved overall comfort, but reviewers still find too much cheap and hard plastic surfaces. The 2009 Altima seats four, with generous front legroom (44 inches), but limited rear leg and headroom for adults over 6 feet tall, compared to its competitors. Its 60/40 split-folding seats open onto a good-sized 15.3-cubic-foot trunk. Reviewers find the controls well laid out, with the exception of the complicated optional navigation system, which unfortunately incorporates the audio and climate controls.

Base models come decently equipped with power features and tilt and telescopic steering, but no CD player. The best-value-for-the-money S adds the well-liked Smart Key keyless ignition and a CD player with MP3 jack. The more performance oriented SE and SL add a sport-tuned suspension, a power driver's seat, 6-CD player, and sporty touches such as xenon headlights and heated leather seats, all of which are available as options on the lower trims. The Hybrid resembles the S. A sunroof is available for all trims.

Safety-wise, the 2009 Altima earns five stars in all categories except rollover, where it earns four. ABS brakes and dual front-side and side curtain airbags for both rows come standard on the four-cylinders, and moving up to the V6 gets you standard traction and stability control. Critics praise the upgraded interior and exciting ride, but point out that the sport suspension in the SE and SL is noticeably harsher. Some body lean and light steering detract from the sporty pretensions, and the four-cylinder can be noisy on acceleration. The roomy 2009 Altima starts out attractively and modestly priced, but critics warn that option packages significantly jack up the overall cost.
