Who Makes Ram Trucks?

by Leo Wilkinson

Ram is an American car brand known for its trucks and vans. It started off as a model line within the Dodge brand in 1980, but Ram has been a standalone brand since 2011 and is today part of the Stellantis group, which was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the PSA Group in 2021.

Who Makes Ram Trucks?

Although Ram is a familiar name its history only stretches back to 1980, when Dodge – one of the oldest American car brands – introduced the Ram name for its range of truck models. It wasn’t plucked from the air, however, since Dodge had used a ram hood ornament for some of its trucks from the 1930s to the 1950s.

The range of Ram truck and van models expanded over the years and in 2011 Ram became a brand in its own right. Dodge, owned by Chrysler since 1928, continued as a separate brand, and in 2021 both became part of Stellantis – the company formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the PSA Group. As well as its US brands, Stellantis owns European carmakers Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati, Peugeot, Opel and Vauxhall.

What Sort of Vehicles Does Ram Make?

Ram makes a range of pickup, truck and van models that are sold in markets all over the world. The US lineup is dominated by variations of its hugely popular Ram 1500 model. Its other two core truck models are the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500. Commercial variants are the Ram 4500 Chassis Cab, Ram 5500 Chassis Cab and Ram ProMaster van. Ram plans to introduce two electrified versions of the 1500 in 2025 – the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is a range-extended EV with a gas engine that acts only as a generator, while the Ram 1500 REV is a pure-electric model.
