I am looking at a automatic with 91000 miles on it and it feels like there are some saftey features to prevent breakdown but i have no idea. is it a risk or does it stand up to the life of the car?

No worries. The Nissan transmissions are known to last the life of the vehicle.
i had an 84 nissan PL720 pickup freshly overhauld motor and i went though trannys before i sold it. the front bearing kept goin out. it was a 5 speed tranny
I haven't had many issues with the Maxima, my customers who have them do there maintance on time and when schuled. Best of luck.
