Nissan altima 06 transmission problem

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a nissan Altima 06. I was driving it and all
the sudden the check engine light came on and
wasn't able to go faster than 50 after. Next day I
took it to a shop and they said I needed a new
transmision and 4th and 4th gear were gone. He
said 1 thousand for transmision and 500 for labor
but i feel like thats alot for what the value of the
car is. Has 15x,xxx milles.
I've been reading here that many people have
problems with nissan transmissions and if i spend
the money to get it replaced for a used one i feel it
will keep giving me problems. Can else can I do
with it If i don't want to fix it.. ?
Also does it have a CVT transmission on it? Ive
read alot about CVT transmissions giving people
problems.

Car is just sitting there scared to drive it i dont
know what to do with it!.. Would I be able to trade it
into a dealership? Or should I get it fixed?

It depends on the condition of the vehicle. I would NOT recommend installing a 'used' transmission. If you decide to keep the car and fix it, get a rebuilt transmission (with a warranty). Since you say you lost 4th gear, that means you do not have a CVT transmission. I would recommend getting a second opinion (different shop) on the problem and estimate to repair.

Yeah 4th and 5th gear i was told were gone. Whats the difference bewteen used and rebuilt transmission? I should take it to another shop but would I be okay to drive it? Nearest shop is like 25 minutes away
