When my 1992 Montero accelerates some times it will sputter like its trying to catch its breath.

I know that sounds crazy because vehicles don't breath but thats the best way to describe it or like it hiccups. It's worse when its on an upward incline. I've also noticed it having trouble when it's idling the RPMs will drop below 1 quickly like its going to die. It doesn't happen unless it's in Drive and warm. These problems are not noticeable to my passengers until today. I believe it is getting worse and more frequent so I'm not driving it much until I know I'm not doing more damage.

you know the EGR device is supposed to engage to intoduce intert gas into the combustion chamber on de-celeration and to cool down combustion temperatures~ frequently this device gets jammed or issues only inert gas (car farts) back into the intake....kind of a silly device, but reduces the overall carbon footprint....I guess..take your egr valve off clean it with Gumout or kerosene and a toothbrush...dry it off and put it back with the NEW gasket~ https://www.google.com/#q=1992+Montero+egr+valve&tbm=shop

I agree with judge about it possibly being an egr issue. Also how long since your last major tune up (plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter ect.)?
