My son had a 2005 Eclipse, REMIXedition, and his died as well. I ended up replacing the
ignition coil assemblies. I went to the local Pick-N-Pull (the PREMIER section) and pulled all
the coils I could. Check YouTube for what and where they are. a picture is worth a thousand
words.
Be certain to take everything! I orgiginally too the plugs, but learned the hard way they
charge you the same price whether it's the plugs or the entire assembly.
I ended up changing the plugs as well when I did coil replacements. It did the trick. Of
course, as I used junk yard parts, it lasted about two months, but the second set I pulled
while there worked perfectly and cured it, at least until a valve stuck and resulted in a
broken timing chain. At that point, the car was sold for $300.
It should be noted the Check Engine Light didn't come on the first time, but did when the
second coil, the one from the junk yard, failed, but they worked great.
I paid $20.00 at the junk yard versus $65.00 for a set of new ones at a local big auto store,
and that was with a 10% veteran discount.
