Check engine soon- light on

I have a 1999 mitsubishi galant ES w/ 52k
miles. Just purchased it. All of a sudden
the "check engine soon" light came on.
Any idea what it could be?  HELP!! TY

You can go to an auto parts store and ask them to scan it for you. If it is due to it being time for an oil change and it was not reset by whom ever changed the oil it would still show. You can check your user manual or online to find how to reset it. If you reset it and light persists, get a free scan at auto parts store.
