an I put a 2003 4.0 engine (Ford) into a 1998 w/4.0 without much difficulty? Both are Explorers

Your 2003 4.0 is a SOHC engine and the 98 is a 4.0 OHV engine. You can swap them out, but you will have to take the PCM from the 03 and install it into the 98. There are probably other sensors in the 03 you will have to take also.
Thank you very much. I'm doing this engine swap for my grandson who just purchased his first truck and a freeze plug went bad and he baked the engine. Funds are tight for him so I'm going to have to fix it, plus buy the engine and install it. He is a GREAT young man.
I know the plug-outs on the PCM are different for the two engines. You will have to do some research and see if sensors from the 03 will be required and installed on the older vehicle.
You will need to swap the exhaust system or at least the cats and O2 sensors so that the ECU has the correct information coming in. You would be much better off getting the correct engine. You will find out the hard way (and expensive way) if you proceed,
