Ticking in motor

Asked by Bryon Oct 20, 2018 at 08:31 AM about the 2018 Ford Mustang GT Premium Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2018 Mustang GT I’ve
changed the oil just like I thought I should but
I’ve got a ticking at idle and almost like the
lifters when I rev it up to 2000 rpms it’s got a
weird knocking sound... I’m curious on what
to do cause I’ve taken back to dealership and
they couldn’t find anything?? Any
suggestions plz

The 5.0 in my new F150 (same engine) also makes all kinds of sewing machine noises. These new ones are direct injection and have an additional set of fuel injectors in the intake manifold. That's right, they have 16 fuel injectors. Ticking noises are normal, but knocking is not. Double check your oil level and make sure you use 5w20 oil as directed by the owner's manual. Take it back to the dealer service department and demonstrate the knocking sound for them. They will get it taken care of.

The F150 V8 is NOT the same as in the Mustangs. The Mustang has upgraded internals, the F150 V8 does not.F150 is E85/FlexFuel, Mustang is not. The Mustang is rated at 460 hp on 93 octane, the F150 is rated at 385-395 hp on 93 octane. The Mustang V8 for 2018 is 90% all new inside with a dual fuel system, direct Injection and port injection. Also, the old BOSS aka Roadrunner motor took 5w50, GT500 5w50 and Track Pack 2011-2014 5w50. The track pack became the Performance Pack in 2015 to present. Also, Lots of people talk oil and say to use a different weight, well oil does not go by weight. It goes by temperature and thickness. Since this new 2018 motor is basically a updated BOSS motor, I'd upgrade your oil and check the filter for glitter! Rumor has it that the specs of the cylinders and pistons are out of spec and Ford supposedly knows this but is unwilling to admit to it. People have had their new GT engine boroscoped found cylinder scoring in several cylinders. That is BAD. You must be politely pushy on this and notify Ford Corperate via email. There are about 50-80 people suffering this same issue, numerous folks have had not one but two ending replacements, yes, on their 3rd motor and the issue still exists, even full engine tear downs cam up empty, almost all the parts replaced and nothing. The engine debacle will make or break Ford. They had better step it up. A class action would wake them up.

2018 Ford Mustang GT- Intermittent engine ticking issue. youtube.com/watch?v=a5CgMkLDobA&t=19s Repairs misdiagnosed and later denied issues by my purchasing dealership, Pine Tree Ford. Attempts made to repair at Meadowvale Ford. They replaced lifters and rockers, and replaced spark plugs with engine coils. Issue still exists.Conveniently, Ford issues a Technical Service Bulletin stating the ticking noise is 'normal' (curious what is abnormal noise to Ford?). There is no consumer protection for anyone purchasing a new vehicle in Canada. Be-aware, of the false notion of warranty repair they promise when you are in the shopping phase. Ultimately, the dealerships hands are tied, since HeadQuarters will push back on every warranty repairs. Do not waste your time with OMVIC on mechanical repairs (even though we pay for it by default on all sales), since they only deal with transnational issues, and not mechanical. No sense in going to Better Business Bureau either. They simply forward your complaints to Ford, and then again, forward you the responses from Ford stating that this is normal manufacturing specs. A useless middleman. In the U.S.A, issues of such nature have been successfully rectified under a true Lemon Law, funded by the tax payers. In almost every case, the dealership has bought back the car. In Canada, we do not have such an obvious consumer protection for probably the second largest monetary purchase you will make. Instead we have CAMVAP, an arbitration process funded by the manufacturers (ironic?). This 'governing body' is in place for the passive, and push-over Canadian consumer. Most cases are rejected, even the evident and severe ones. Ticket/Case has been opened with Ford HQ, since January 2019. Customer Service Rep assigned was not returning any phone calls or emails. -- Update May 9,2019 -- Ford Customer Service Manager calls me back on May 3, 2019 to again tell me to take it back to the dealer. This way Ford "Master Technician" can tear apart my engine again, and come up empty handed. Ford needs to stop these unethical business practices, and don't leave this matter hanging any longer than it has been (issue originally reported on Jun 2018)

Guys this has been around since the first Coyote in 2011, my 2011 convertible GT does it when it warms up at low idle, it has 43000 miles now. If Ford has not solve the problem by now it is not going to happen. Enjoy your mustang and do not pay attention to the tick.
