I have a 1964 Fairlane 500 Sedan with the original V8 260 and 2-speed Fordomatic trans. I want to upgrade just the transmission to a 1964 c4, with a 5 bolt bell housing to match the motor. Knowing the issues with the '64 model year, is this realistic. I'm rebuilding the V8260 to keep at least the motor original. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Question type: General

In '65 the V8 260 was dropped, as was the 2speed Fordomatic. So I'm looking
for something VERY specific so that I don't have to use a modified 6bolt bell
housing c4.

Just talked to my transmission guy, he said to try to find out if the c4 5 bolt was ever put behind the '64 V8 260 as the 289 was ALWAYS a 6 bolt. I'm trying to do the c4 without the hassle and expense of using an adapter bell housing, 6 bolt to 5 bolt to match the motor. I've been told that being a '64 V8 260, it would only ever have a 5 bolt bell housing.

Does anyone know if Ford EVER made, for ANY1964 or other model year, a c4 3 speed Automatic transmission WITH a 5 bolt bell housing? Looking for one if they exist, for my '64 V8 260 with a 5 bolt bell housing. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Look at early Mustang transmissions. I think the first cars with the 260 had a C4. Also look on Ebay for parts. In your car the 3 speed autobox may have been a Ford-O-Matic.

I have found a 1964 Galaxie with a V8 260 and a Cruiseomatic 3 speed auto on the column, which would be great. Anyone have an idea if this will work for my '64 Fairlane 500 sedan with the original V8 260, to swap out my Fordomatic 5 bolt bell housing to match the motor? Owner says, "no problem". Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Since the 64 Fairlane came with an option Cruise-O-Matic 3 speed I would think it would bolt it.

Your 260, 2 speed ford-o-matic bell housing can be removed and put on an early model c-4 If you need help getting a c-4 that will bolt up to your current bell housing, contact Bob @ 559-981-0813 If the vehicle had a c-4 in it, you would see a green dot on the steering column shift selector. The vehicle would default to 2 speed unless you selected the green dot. B.T.W., there are many early model c-4's that will bolt up to your existing bell housing.

Ford had a 1964 fairlane with a “289 special” that was also a 5 bolt bell. I had one during high school. 50 years later I have a 1964 fairlane with 260 2speed
