front end noise while braking

Asked by ragribben Sep 06, 2010 at 11:58 AM about the 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2002 Liberty and it has started making this pulsating metal on rubber type noise when I brake, if I have to brake hard it does not make the noise but for normal stopping it occurs.  The noise comes from the front and gets louder as you come to a stop but once you stop the noise goes away.  I have checked my rotors and brakes and they both seem to be in good shape.
Any help as to what this might be would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Becky

how long has it been since you had brakes done? sounds to me like the pads are probably pretty thin and scraping on the rotors, which probably also are warped or old....unless you had a recent brake job? ceramic pads are noisier than the cheap ones they use from the factory. unless the noise is from the rear of the jeep. they still use a drum style emergency brake, you can get dirt in the drum, or the emergency brake pads ( yes even if you've never once used the e brake) can loosen or flake apart and start to drag on the rotor... but again...really just thing you need a new set of brakes.
