1996 Chevrolet K1500 Shift problem

I have a 96 Silverado k1500 5.7L
It drives in Manual 1st, 2nd and 3rd but when I put it in
regular drive it starts out in second and I can only go
40mph before it stops shifting. I still Have reverse

How many miles on it ? I'd say it's time for a rebuild . Precision tranny on U-TOOB does videos on those . You should take the effort to find a good shop .
