There is a lock in the shifter that prevents you from shifting into park or reverse while moving. First check that your brake lights are illuminating when you step on the brake pedal. If not your brake switch is bad and the lock isn't getting the signal that the car is stopped and your foot is on the brake. If the brake lights work then I would bet that the shift lock is faulty.
