Has anyone needed to replace the rear brakes on their under 50k mile Crosstrek?

Rear brakes going first on newer Subies is common. Thin pads.
39,500. Mine too! Front breaks are fine. I have a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek.
They do pads first and disks later.

44,600 miles on mine and have to replace rear. Fronts are good. Driver side is worst than passenger side also. They account for salt spray for the uneven wear.
I replaced the front and rear pads on my 15 Forester at around 80k miles.
2014 Crosstrek and I have replaced the pads and rotors twice now :/ Doesn't seem right to me. Same situation with my sisters 2014 Crosstrek, all replaced twice in the past 2 years.
I have a 2016 with 61,000 and have not had to replace either set of brakes. Every time we check, they are in good shape. Getting ready to rotate tires and check again. Are you taking these cars back to the dealer for brakes? Maybe that's the issue.

I have 2017 crosstrek- summer of 2018 -replaced rear brakes- summer of 2019 -replaced front and rear brakes! Mileage now at 44k. Rear brake replacement done the first time at general mechanic place-maybe what they installed was poor quality.
I have a 2018 Crosstrek with 22,000 miles. Brakes suddenly metal/metal without warning and loud clunking noise determined to be loose, semi detached rotor!!!! Replaced under warrant, but still,,,,,,, way too soon. Brake indicator light never came on.

We have a 2017 Crosstrek and they said we needed new rotors and pads at 26,000 miles. I complained to Subaru and they decided to waive the fee of close to $1000. I thought that was pretty interesting. My daughter has a 2014 Crosstrek and she got rotors and pads replaced on one side last year and says it sounds like the other side needs replacing now. Seems to be a design flaw and a pretty expensive one.

I have a 2017 Crosstrek with 60,000 miles and have replaced the brakes twice. More concerning is I had to replace both rear calipers as one seized at 50,000 and the other at 60,000 miles. My mechanic is a former service dept. manager for a Subaru dealer who has his own business now and said he is seeing a number of newer Subarus with this issue.
2013 Crosstrek - I got 59 miles on the first set of rear pads, I has Subaru replaced the pads and resurfaced the rotors. Fronts were done at 72 miles. Today I had my car at Conrads for a tire rotation and to check noise in the rear that I though was a wheel bearing and they showed me that the rear pads and rotors are worn out. What no one can explain is how we got 59 miles from the first set of rear pads and only 18 miles on second set of OEM Subaru rear pads. I now have to replace rear rotors so it will be interesting to see how long rear pads with new rotors last.
2018 Crosstrek Sport 50,000 kms needed new rear brake pads/rotors. Front pads also need replacing and the rotors need to be turned. It's ridiculous. Nearly $2000 cdn quoted to do this job!!! NEVER. EVER. BUYING a Subaru again.

I asked for the Service manager and complained (in the nicest way possible). He gave me the number for Subaru's Customer Service and I called them and said, "I'm not happy!" (again with humor and pleasantness). The next day they called to tell me as a gesture of "customer good will", that they would pay the almost $1000 to replace the rear pads and disks (I think that's what it was). Then at Christmas time I received a box of Subaru swag - a hat, cushy lap robe and thermos). Hmmm, I thought. I'm on to something here. My brother thinks there might be a hidden warranty on Crosstrek brakes. No idea but if you have your bills and you went through a dealer, I'd suggest you call Subaru Customer Service.
22 k on my crosstrek need rear brakes Subaru has an issue with brakes replaced all brakes on my wifes forester 3 times once at 20k 2nd at 36 k and then 52 k mechanic says there is a design flaw and dirt gets in caliper 3rd repair I would not let Subaru dealer do it. First answer from them is because we didn't drive the car enough. I love my crosstrek but I think im going to dump it
The inside rear brake is applied by the computer to reduce under-steer. The rear pads may be thinner.
had to have my rear brakes replaced at 26,000 on my 2018 Crosstrek. This is my 5th Subaru - last one was a 2015 Crosstrek Hybrid that would just stop dead on the highway with 1/4 tank of gas left, happened 6 times!. We basically took that back to the dealer with 6 months left to go on the lease and told them it was a deathtrap, but needed a car and got pushed into the 2018. I have gone between 60,000-80,000 on my other Subarus before the brakes were replaced. This is my last one, I am tired of the multiple recalls and their pushy sales tactics.

I had to have rear brakes and and rotors replaced at 17500 miles on my 2017 Crosstrek. At 20800 miles front brakes had to be replaced and rotors resurfaced. Here I am now at 25000 going back for front brakes and rotors again. Is Subaru using poor quality brakes that they only last 5000 miles. Subaru covered the last two times, we'll see what happens this time...

Crosstrek 2018 with 49k. Went for service type “B” and got a call to confirm rear pads needed to be replaced (less than 2 mm) as well as rotors. I am surprised this needs already to be replaced

I've got a 2016 Crosstrek Premium w/Eyesight, driven less than 6,000 miles per year. Rear brakes had to be done at 15,500 miles and boy was I annoyed. I called Subaru of America to complain, and they sent me a voucher to cover the brake repairs. What a pleasant surprise! Yesterday, I went in to the dealership for a routine oil change, tire rotation, and state inspection, and was told my front brakes are 1mm (L) and 2mm (R), and need to be replaced ASAP. My Crosstrek only has 19,650 miles on it. I'm pretty pissed off. So I called Subaru's customer service number and spoke to a rep who couldn't possibly have been less interested in what I was saying. He kept telling me that "brake pads are a wear item" and sometimes need to be replaced at the low end of the estimated mileage range, usually due to "driving style." (Meaning what? That I ride my brakes?!?) I said, well, yes, but at 30k or 40k, not at 14k or 19k miles! He continued to insist that needing to have both front and back brakes done before 20,000 miles is normal. I asked to speak to a supervisor/manager, and am now waiting to get a return phone call from Subaru of America. This should NOT be happening. It's making me reconsider buying another Subaru.
My 15 Forester went eighty thousand miles before having to replace the brake pads so this is not a universal problem. Driving habits are the single biggest factor in brake replacement intervals.
It's interesting that you're the only one on this feed that has a Forester, not a Crosstrek. I think the problem is with Crosstreks. The fact that Subaru is so quick to pay the brake costs suggests to me that this is a problem with this model. Gad to hear that your Forester is more reliable on this front at any rate.

36000 km on my 2018 Crosstrek and I need a brake job on the rear brakes. I’ve bought new cars every 4 years since 1970 and have never needed my brakes repaired - until now. Something badly wrong here with Crosstrek rear brakes and Subaru needs to own up.
I have 80,000 on my 2017 Forester...have yet to find a need to do any brake work...amazing!
You are the second person with a Forester to remark on your good fortune. This - anecdotally at least - seems to be a problem with Crosstreks, not all Subarus.
2018 Crosstrek 31,000 miles heading in today because of brake issues.... this is my 4th time! first time in was at 7000 miles .... do 60 mph and step on the brake and it acts like a bucking bronco lol

I have 30,000 miles on my 2017 Crosstrek. Replacing back breaks today at the Subaru dealer (rotors are fine). Front brakes are at 60%. Cost $309 for the back brakes.

Just had the 30k service done on my 2019 Crosstrek to the tune of $600+. They told me brake pads are fine but are recommending calipers be replaced?! Maybe Subaru will listen and provide???
Demand that they replace the calipers under warranty!

My 2014 Crosstrek needed brake pads and rotors on the rear as well as pads on the front at 45500 miles on 7/19. Today 8/21 I was told the screeching was metal on metal on the rears that needs brake pads and another set of rotors on them as well as pads on the front at 65,000. (2 years and 20,000 miles later?????) Crazy

Subaru Forester 2017. 37 000 KM. Need to replace the rear brakes in 2020. This week, at 68 000 KM, need to replace the rear brakes again (not Subaru brand). My mechanic said he repair a lot of Subaru (Forester) with rear brakes problems at arour 30 000 KM - 40 000 KM.
2020 Subaru Crosstrek - manual transmission - glad to hear that everyone is having these problems with the rear brake pads and rotors, i was interested in the one comment that said the computer triggers this break as well, 45000 kms, no pad on the driver's side rear, booklet says its not covered under warranty, and my husband who is not a mechanic by trade, but does all of our work and will do a way better job, I'll be more confident buying my own new pads and rotors, and having my husband put them on.
2018 Crosstrek Sport. 120,000 km. Brake pads 70% front and 40% rear. Guess I’m doing okay. I’ve been very happy with it except for paint job but Subaru Canada covered a complete repaint after a year.
