Car stalled while pumping gas

Asked by Guru3LR15 Jul 07, 2020 at 06:48 AM about the 1967 Pontiac Firebird Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I fueled up my 67 firebird while the engine was running the
car stalled and wouldn't start after that like it wasn't getting
gas to the carburetor.  I tried  starting 4 hours later and it
started. Was it in a vapor lock ? Did it have anything to do
with leaving the car running while pumping gas, or could it
be the fuel pump  or carburetor? It was 90 degrees out that
day.

Sure it could have been vapor lock. Sitting at idle on a hot day could do that. They do make kits for adding a return line for classic or muscle cars running mechanical fuel pumps that will prevent vapor lock.

For your own safety and those around you at the pump, do not fuel the vehicle while it is running. Fuel vapors spread from the gas inlet and could easily be ignited by a hot exhaust component or electrical spark.
