Starter grinds in park.

The starter disengages. Have to rock truck back
and forth to reset something. In the transmission
maybe?

If it makes that terrible grinding sound, it because the teeth on the starter drive gear aren't matching up with flywheel teeth. I'd have to check both, the starter drive gear and flywheel teeth. Some vehicles have a flywheel cover piece, which you can remove and examine the flywheel teeth. good luck
