Burning oil

Asked by abcortez71 Oct 05, 2012 at 09:11 PM about the 2000 GMC Savana G1500 Passenger Van

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 GMC Savana van 151000 miles. Do not notice an oil leak but have to add oil somewhat frequently.
What can cause this? More importantly much to repair?

Most likely valve guides, could also be pcv, or any upper gasket that will allow the oil to burn off so you will never notice a leak. Easiest and most common way to check the valve guides is when the vehicle sits for a few days it will puff a decent smoke cloud on a cold start up. Eventually it will puff when you take off at long stop lights. PCV is easy to check, gt one of those fluorescent leak detectors from the parts store to check for external leaks.
