Overheating

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just replaced water pump, hoses and the
thermostat. My car is still overheating. Not right
away but it does. It overheats quicker when I put on
the AC. A while back the inside of the coolant cap
was muddy... do you think my radiator is clogged ?
The radiator was smoking the other day. Anything
helps

Does the cooling fan work? Mud in the radiator sounds like oil from a leaking head gasket. You could try flushing the radiator but if you are getting oil into the coolant the fix will be temporary at best.

From what I've seen it only turn on when I put on the ac. But haven't really checked the fan

But after I bought the car I realized it had no coolant could that bra reason also for the mudddy stuff?

The AC adds additional load on the cooling system. It is not the cause of your problem, just a symptom.

Yeah after I seen the muddy stuff I tried flushing it by opening something at the bottom of the radiator and ran water thru it. Water drained a lot of the stuff out but I don't think water can get all of it

At firrst this is how it looked. But it has no coolant just water. It doesn't look like that now the top of the cap is clean but idk about inside of the radiator

That is oil in the cooling system. I suppose it could be from the radiator if the transmission cooler is leaking oil into the radiator. Check for water in the transmission but I think you have a bad head gasket or a cracked head.

So you wouldn't think me getting my radiator flushed before would make a difference?

After you fix it, a flush is a must, that is what the cooling passageways look like in the motor.

Ok but I haven't seen any of that stuff since the last time I flushed it with water.

F_O_R It was the radiator leaking oil inside and causing it to overheat not head gasket

Could be a number of things. But check the areas that would be must likely. Water pump, coolant, radiator/fan cooling system (test fan relay by swapping same amp relay from a different one into its spot) than see if the fan kicks on when you crank the AC to full blast. Than check for leaks
