Went thru big puddle help!!

I went thru a large puddle about 15-20 inches high (about 15-20ft long) about a month ago and my car now makes an engine whining type sound (near the belts and alternator?) on startup and on acceleration. Any ideas? It was on a street I normally go thru and didn't think it could possibly be that high. Of course I search the internet and it could be a 30 different things. I brought it to my regular mechanic and he thinks he knows what it could be but not 100% certain. Bringing to Toyota in a week and hoping they can pinpoint it for sure, $120 diag fee stinks though.
