Fuel pump area gas leak

Asked by Laura Jul 27, 2018 at 06:38 PM about the 2014 Dodge Charger SE RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Check engine light came on and saw car was
leaking gas onto ground in side of gas tank. Found
there was a corroded/burnt fuse at the fuel pump
connector, gas was present. Emptied tank, replaced
fuel pump. Drove it and check, no leak visible.
Parked car for 24 hours then checked and there is
more gas that has leaked on top of tank near fuel
pump. Car has not been driven since last check and
there is only 1/4 tank of gas. Any ideas?!!! We wiped
away gas only to watch it seep back in slowly
immediately after.

O-Ring might be damaged/not making a proper seal or the plastic fuel hat has crack(s) in it causing the leak

Or your locking ring isn't on tight. And it is also possible that your connector has a short in it which melted the plastic around the pins large enough to allow gasoline to come through like mine has done.

My Chrysler 300 did the same thing twice. Pins around connector melted plastic and caused leak. Figured out from people sitting in the back seat disturbs the connector. I upgraded the cover and haven't had any issues since. Check out www.fuelconnectorfire.com

According to the suggestions in this thread, it could be the pump o-ring seal either isn't tight or deteriorated. It could be the plastic on the top of the fuel pump is cracked, fuel line leak or it could be the electrical connector has melted around the pins causing a leak. See: www.fuelconnectorfire.com Check these suggestions and let our community here know what you found for future reference. Having raw fuel dripping under the car is always a cause for concern. Keep safe.

The whole gas tank has to replace and it’s not cheap. About $1700 just for the tank itself and it’s an dealer item only.
