Your 2006 might not have a mechanical cable, probably electronic. I would suspect you are low on fluid, or something internal to the transmission has failed. Best to have it towed to a shop that you can have it diagnosed properly.
It is possible the linkage bushing broke off and put you in neutral or park. With the engine running, switch gears, then look at the dash and see if the lights follow what gear you're in. If not, the bushing broke and it's a $6 fix. If it does follow, needs to be diagnosed by a pro.
