Gear Shift rubber parts "melting"

Asked by Guru7G77Y Jun 25, 2020 at 01:30 PM about the 2014 Ford Escape SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The "rubber" on the gear shift of my 2014 Ford Escape is " disintegrating/
peeling". Pieces of the rubber will literally stick to your hand. I realize FL sun is
hot, but the car lives in the garage when it is not being driven. Any ideas or
fixes are greatly appreciated!

F_O_R - So replace the whole gear shift? Or do you know if you can "just" replace the knob. I have never had this happen on a car before, it is just weird.

They make covers for shifter knobs, similar to steering wheels. Here's an example on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/2012-2016-2014-2016-2013-2016-Automatic- Accessories/dp/B0B2JSV3G9/ref=psdc_15737011_t1_B00TCAVD3W?th=1

This is definitely a DEFECT....FORD should pay for replacing them. Mine is doing the same. I want to stop the chunking off before I place a leather glove on it....any ideas??

i tried applying super glue using a small paint brush. it slowed down the melting of the rubber. however, it made the gear shift knob feel plasticky. so i covered the knob with an accessory.
