can you remove the cv joints on a 2000 dodge dakota 4x4 and still drive it in 2 wheel drive.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the splines on the axle are stripped and I want to take out the cv joints and make it a 2
wheel drive temporarily. will this hurt anything? will it effect the wheel bearings?

Well. With the unit bearing design you should be good. Under normal conditions the unit bearing will operate as normal and support the weight of the vehicle. It does look like the CV stub seals the wheel bearing on the inside. If the bearing did fail you would loose your wheel though, the CV stub would help hold the bearing guts in and the dust out.

The 2000 Dakota should have the front axle disconnect. I would leave the good CV in for now. Remove the bad one (assuming both the splines in the bearing and on the CV are stripped) and disassemble the shaft. Install the stub in the bearing and torque the nut. Install the CV cup in the front diff. In 2wd the cup should not turn, but will keep the dust out. You will prob need to re-assemble the CV for the core. There not that bad to do. If it's the splines in the diff cover the hole somehow as the cup may not stay in??
