Where should I buy a remanufactured engine for my 1988 VSW Cabriolet ?

My good condition and beloved 1988 VW Cambriolet had a terminal engine knocking sound which looks like either a piston or a con rod has failed.  The dealer wants to rebuild the engine in the chassis for an absurd amount of money. Can you recommend some companies who provide remanufactured engines for vintage VWs ?  Thank you.
