Check the fuel rail regulator it is one of the problems that crop up if not the fuel pump. My 89 it ended up the fuel pump the regulator is $20 fix.

This sounds like a common issue with the 2.9L V6 engines, the TFI module is bad, its located on the back side of the distributor at the back of the engine almost up against the firewall...no wonder it gets hot and dies a miserable death. There are some people who have modified them and mounted them in other locations with better airflow to keep them cool. Here's a link to a remote TFI module DIY how to....https://www.therangerstation.com/how- to/ignition-charging-computers/remote-mounted-tfi-ignition-module/

replace the tfi module. The motorcraft ones are a pos. get an aftermarket one and a relocation harness. The distributor mounting is prone to high heat which kills the module.
