96 Dakota engine replacement

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 Dodge Dakota with the 318 and automatic transmission. I need
to replace the engine, and I'd like to know if I can use any 318 from any
year Dakota or Dodge Ram pickup. Someone told me that there were
several different blocks (R, B, and RB) but I don't know if that's true or not,
nor do I know what block mine has. The truck isn't currently with me, so I
can't investigate.

You could look up what kind of blocks you have and then see if they match the other blocks

Check the laws in your State. Some States do not allow engine swaps from an older model year car. Most States don't care, just make sure first

I tried unsuccessfully to use a Vin decoder to identify my block type. Most of the engines I've seen note that it's a Vin code "y", which is what mine is, but that doesn't seem to be helpful. And I'll have to look into the law thing, since I've never heard of anything like that. I'm in PA, if that means anything. We have lots of junkyards here.
