Why is Kia/Hyundai allowed to sell defective engines

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our Kia sportage engine
failed at 139000 miles. No
warning light, just lost
power. Mechanic found
metal shavings in oil. Kia
has been a aware of this
problem but will not fix it.
Now we're stuck with a car
that we cannot afford to
repair. Cannot even find an
engine as they are on back
order.

No engine warranty runs to 140,000 miles. Metal shavings could be from all sorts of issues. Have you kept the oil level correct all those miles and have you always changed the oil on time?

Yeah, that's what so frustrating. We are meticulous about car maintenance. This Theta II 2.4 liter engine was defective. There are thousands of similar complaints of engine failure with these particular engines. I appreciate you opinion though.

What part failed? Without knowing what the part is I could only guess as to the cause.

The first mechanic said it the engine seized up and found metal shavings in the oil. The kia dealer then confirmed it was a failed engine. That is all they say. I heard the lifters making a noise then a loud knock before it lost power. I really liked that Suv. It still looks brand new. So bummed here.

Sorry to hear that your engine failed. If you had neglected it I would not be so sympathetic but you did everything right. At least the car was cheap?

It was around 26,000. My first new car. After I have it towed back to our farm (it broke down 200 miles from our place) I plan to have our local mechanic take the engine apart so we know for sure what caused the failure. Again, thank you for all your replies and support.

Kia is allowed to sell defective engines because have paid off some politician, who paid off some some other people to keep their mouths shut, including judges. Think Mexican Cartel - it's the same thing only that the drug is money itself. I got so screwed by Kia that I have vowed that I will post about their disgusting conduct 3x/day for 365 days. If out of my 1000 post only 200 people read it and then 2 people DO NOT buy a Kia as they had planned - then that's enough motivation for me to keep spreading the truth.
