Driveshaft positioning

I have a 01 dakota 2wd automatic 3.9
an had accident where driveshaft came
out at overdrive.Repair shop said its
fixable.
I want to replace the shaft but needed
to know how to realign the new shaft
correctly.
The old is still in it an last time driven it
was still in drive .The shifter is in park
now -tow driver moved it.
How do I realign the new shaft
correctly or tell if rear is still in drive
,etc?
Do I jack up rear an test spin wheels to
see  or what?
Any info is appreciated
