2013 Ford Edge Limited blower fan self adjusting speed to low

Asked by JB64870 Oct 07, 2019 at 09:22 AM about the 2013 Ford Edge Limited AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2013 Ford Edge Limited, AWD.  Recently, the blower fan will self
adjust the fan speed to low and won't stop.  There is the tok, tok, tok button
sound indicating button is being pressed when no one is adjusting fan speed.
I cannot turn off or adjust the climate control setting nor adjust fan speed while
this is happening.  Need solution help to correct this malfunction.

I have the same issue on my 2012. Dealer says it needs a new control panel but it has been on backorder. Been waiting about 2 months so far. I would love a simple answer that would stop it. I can make it temporarily stop by rubbing my finger across the + and - of the fan speed control. That will make it stop for a little while.

Did you ever find a definitive answer to this problem? My 2012 has just started doing the same thing.

Finally fixed my 2012 Edge doing the same thing. AC fan making sound like someone is pressing the down button, but it is doing it itself. This turned out to be the AC fan controller resistor located behind the glove box. My mistake was I first replaced it with a 20 dollar Chinese part as I didn't want to spend the money buying OEM. It did the same thing with the cheap part. I purchased the original Motocraft part, $140.00 and it fixed the problem. Hope this helps someone experiencing the same kind of problems.

Update, the cause of the resistor going bad is a fan motor wearing out. The motor is working too hard to turn the blades and overheats the resistor causing it to self adjust the fan speed to low. This problem with the self adjustment to the lowest setting is a sign the fan motor probably needs to be replaced. Forcing it to run by turning the speed back up over and over again will eventually damage the resistor.
