Oil pressure, rod bearing damage

Asked by GuruGPZBY Aug 27, 2020 at 07:41 PM about the 2003 Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Took 2003 Dodge Viper to certified viper tech, two items to repair. Cracked
vacuum hose in front of trunk and low oil pressure gauge at idle. They fixed the
vacuum hose and then drove the car for 90 miles to reset onboard computer.
Due to low oil pressure  not remedied two rods disintegrated and ended up in
oil pan. Now they want $14k to rebuild engine. Thoughts?

Drove it 90 miles, wink, wink. I think your mechanics pulled a Ferris Bueller on you. Sounds like 90 miles at red line.

Sounds like a BS story to me. Since you knew the oil pressure was low when you took in, they did too. Before the rods were thrown the engine would have been noisy and anyone would have known something was wrong and shut down the engine. Here's the two problems. First the vehicle is 17 years old and second it's probably not worth $14,000. So if you take them to court you're only going to get the value of the vehicle at the time they destroyed it. If it were me, that's what I'd do. Sue them for the value of the vehicle, then junk it. Hope that helps! Jim
