Fuel filter

Asked by Robyn Jan 20, 2014 at 10:58 PM about the 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee
Sport 4.0 4X4.
It runs ruff but lately it will
quit unexpectedly (while
driving) as if the key has been
turned off. We have replaced
the O2 sensor, a gas sensor
and lastly the cam sensor. I
have been told this is most
likely the fuel pump filter/
screen. Making it lose fuel
pressure and they
recommend a pressure test
and then replacing the filter
and maybe the pump.
Does this Jeep model have a
filter? Is so is it located on the
frame or inside the tank?
Really could use a pic of a
diagram to go by
Thanks for any advise,
greatly appreciated.

It's on top of the tank, and part of the fuel pump assembly. It's a pressure regulator/filter. See the attached link. It's the silver cylinder on top of the pump unit. The filter is listed as non-serviceable, but can be purchased separately from the unit. It's pricey though. I found one on eBay for $60. rockauto.com sells the complete pump module for about $100, depending on which brand you choose. http://www.rockauto.com/getimage/getimage.php?imagekey=4026555&imageurl=http%3A//www.rockauto.com/info/Precise/402-P7121MN.jpg

Check for filter/pressure regulator. Located just forward of gas tank bolted to frame cost is 27 bucks or so. The previous answer saying attached to top of tank pump was for 98 and earlier.

Grizzly, you are incorrect. The 4.0L Cherokee Sport is mounted on top of the tank, and considered non-serviceable. The filter that you speak of, is for the Grand Cherokee 4.0L.

grizzly is half right, 96ish and earlier had the inline filter on the passenger side frame rail (by what i have seen that is cherokee and grand) while the newer ones have it built into the pump. a filter in my area can be bought but it is more expensive then the pump.

Your best bet is to stop all the stress by going ahead and changing your c.p.s. ( cranking position sensor). Its not easy sorry to say. Yet sounds exactly like that's what it is. I've got 1 myself and went through the same things. In the end that's what it was. Go ahead and do it for yourself

Check the ECM or the wires going to it. Sometimes inside the unit there are broken wires !
