You can do this but there are issues to check out and it is possible to get it running. The motor will bolt in no problem. The problem is with the reluctor ring, (tone ring) in the engines crankshaft. 2002 is when they changed from a 16 tooth reluctor to a 32 tooth reluctor ring. Most 2002 I have found to be the 16 tooth. This you need to figure out, and If I remember right, it is just a matter of changing the computer and wiring harness. There is a lot of information out there you can look up to see what exactly needs to be done, but it is possible. If the 2002 engine has the 32 tooth reluctor ring, then your golden.

Hey, here to help, this is what its all about, people helping people...So no it is the same engine basically, just the way it is set-up on top of the engine, besides the reluctor, is what may be different.

Chris can you let me know how this turned out for you. I bought an 08 4.7 dual spark plugs engine and putting it in a 2002 ram. I changed out the tone rings both crank and cam. Also the dual plugs both fire fine with 02 truck electronics. Only thing that makes me think alot of people that say they've done this swap make not have is because I've heard no mention of the exhaust manifold being different bolt up to the newer heads and the flanges point in slightly different locations. I took it to a muffler shop and had them redoe the connections. How did your build go and don't d you run into same issue. So far reluctor issue, and exhaust manifold issue. I made an adapter plate from r the original cable throttle body. Thanks. Rich

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango with a blown out engine that I had recently put over 1,000 into. I was wondering what type of engines would be compatible for this truck. Or if I should just call it quits?

I have an 02 Durango 4.7. It still runs but I can hear a piston and was told it was gonna give out on me. I found an 05 Durango and was wondering if I can swap engines if I buy it. The 05 is a salvage but the engine is fine. Will it work?

i have a 2005 dodge durango magnum 4.7, it leaks antifreeze and looks like a expansion plug between motor and transmission... but the other day i seen steam coming from under intake manifold, im wondering what water jackets are under the intake manifold to leak i know it doesnt have antifreeze in intake so im baffled it leaks when it wants too... and i just got a 08 durango with a flex fuel 4.7 is it possible to change that motor to the 05 if i use ecm and harness?
