Torque transfer

Asked by GuruCMWSP Mar 09, 2019 at 06:24 PM about the 2006 Dodge Magnum R/T AWD

Question type: General

How does my Magnum R/T AWD transfer 35% of the Hemi's torque to the front wheels,  and can it be by-passed to provide 100% torque to the rear end?  Will this diminish the life expectancy of the rear differentials or axles?

1 Answer

There is a Transfer Case behind the transmission. The transmission output shaft has a chain sprocket on it and a second parallel shaft, also with a sprocket, that runs forward to the Front Wheel Drive. The Drive Chain connecting the two shafts transfer the torque and RPMs. The front and rear wheels MUST travel at the same speed, so the 35% front torque and 65% rear torque cannot be proportioned within the transfer case but by some other 'Torque Limiter' on the front wheel drive. As torque will not be used to its fullest advantage if the tires spin ("If you are spinning, you ain't winning."), the 35/65% is a bit ambiguous. The same differential is used on both the RWD and AWD versions of the Magnum R/T, so 100% of the 5.7L Hemi's torque can be applied the rear wheels safely.
